Arya waited until Adrian's footsteps disappeared before she closed the door.
Then she locked it.
Once.
Twice.
She stood there silently, her back against the door.
Her secret had survived three years.
She had survived a loveless marriage, Adrian's coldness, his family's contempt, and the constant fear that someone would discover who she really was.
But tonight, everything had changed.
Adrian knew about the Vales.
Worse, someone had followed her.
She walked quickly to the bedroom and pulled the black box from beneath the bed.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
The photograph was still there.
So was the ring.
But the document was gone.
Adrian had taken it.
"Damn it."
She sat on the edge of the bed.
Her mother had warned her never to trust a Blackwood.
Especially Adrian.
But Arya had broken that rule years ago.
Not because she wanted to.
Because she had fallen in love with him.
She closed her eyes.
That was the part she hated most.
Even after everything he had done, a part of her still remembered the man he had been before their marriage.
The man who had once smiled at her.
The man who had held her hand when she was sick.
The man who had promised, just once, that she would never have to face the world alone.
Then he had changed.
And Arya had never understood why.
Until now.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She stared at the screen.
Once.
Twice.
Then she answered.
"Hello?"
No one spoke.
Arya's expression changed.
"Who is this?"
A man's voice finally came through.
"You should have stayed away from the Blackwoods."
Her blood ran cold.
"Who are you?"
"You were warned."
The call ended.
Arya immediately checked the number.
Blocked.
Her heart began pounding.
She moved to the window and looked outside.
Nothing.
Just an empty street.
Then she noticed it.
A black car parked beneath a streetlamp.
Its engine was running.
Arya stepped away from the window.
Someone was watching her.
She reached for her phone again.
Before she could call anyone, a message appeared.
You have until tomorrow night.
A second message followed.
Leave Adrian, or the truth about your father dies with you.
Arya froze.
Her father.
Nobody was supposed to know he was alive.
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
That was impossible.
Unless...
Someone from the old Vale circle had found her.
She immediately grabbed her coat.
She couldn't stay there.
Not tonight.
---
Across the city, Adrian stood inside his study.
The document Arya had hidden lay open on his desk.
His eyes moved over the details again.
The name at the bottom made his blood run cold.
Arya Valentina Vale.
Not Arya Blackwood.
Not an ordinary woman.
A Vale.
Adrian leaned back slowly.
He remembered his father's warnings.
"If you ever hear that name again, stay away."
He had never understood why.
Until now.
His phone rang.
He answered.
"What did you find?"
His security chief spoke carefully.
"We checked old records."
"And?"
"There's something you need to see."
Adrian waited.
"The Vale family's eldest daughter was reported dead fifteen years ago."
His eyes narrowed.
"That isn't possible."
"We know."
"Then explain."
"The records were falsified."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"By whom?"
"We're still investigating."
He looked at Arya's photograph on his desk.
There was something else bothering him.
Something that didn't make sense.
If Arya had married him to investigate her family's past, why had she stayed for three years?
Why had she tolerated his cruelty?
Why had she never exposed him?
And why had she left tonight without demanding anything?
His phone rang again.
This time, it was his mother.
Adrian hesitated before answering.
"Mother."
"Where are you?"
"In my study."
"You need to come home immediately."
"Why?"
Her voice dropped.
"Your father found out about Arya."
Adrian's expression changed.
"What did he find out?"
There was silence.
Then his mother whispered,
"She's a Vale."
Adrian's eyes hardened.
"I already know."
Another silence.
"Then you don't know the worst part."
He stood.
"What?"
His mother's breathing became uneven.
"Your father believes Arya didn't marry you for revenge."
Adrian frowned.
"Then why?"
"Because she is the rightful heir."
His hand froze around the phone.
"To what?"
His mother didn't answer immediately.
Then she said,
"Everything your family stole from hers."
The call ended.
Adrian stood motionless.
Suddenly, the pieces began falling into place.
Arya hadn't entered his life by accident.
She hadn't been helpless.
She hadn't been ordinary.
And perhaps the biggest lie of all...
wasn't the one Arya had told him.
It was the lie his own family had been telling him his entire life.
