The masked man moved faster than human eyes could follow.
One moment he stood at the end of the passage.
The next, his blade of living shadow crashed against Caelan's silver sword.
A deafening clang echoed through the tunnel.
The force of the collision sent a powerful gust of wind rushing through the ancient passage, extinguishing every torch along the walls.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Except their weapons.
Caelan's sword burned with brilliant silver light.
The stranger's blade glowed like liquid darkness.
For several heartbeats, neither warrior moved.
They simply stared at one another.
Then the masked man smiled.
"So the stories are true."
His voice carried an unsettling calm.
"The Immortal Guardian still lives."
Caelan's expression remained unreadable.
"And you're older than your master."
The stranger chuckled.
"You recognize me?"
"I recognize the magic."
A flicker of surprise crossed the man's crimson eyes.
"Interesting."
He pushed forward with impossible strength, forcing Caelan back a single step.
It was enough to make Captain Rowan's blood run cold.
He had never seen anyone move the Guardian.
Not once.
"Princess!"
Livia grabbed Elara's arm.
"We have to leave."
"I can't."
"You'll only distract him."
Elara hated that she was right.
She watched as shadow creatures poured into the tunnel, their glowing eyes fixed on her.
Not on the King.
Not on the soldiers.
On her.
Captain Rowan barked orders.
"Protect the Princess!"
The royal guards formed a defensive circle around Elara and King Aldric.
Steel met claws.
Magic burst through the narrow corridor.
The ancient passage became a battlefield.
One shadow lunged toward Livia.
Before anyone could react, Elara instinctively reached out.
"No!"
Silver light exploded from her hand.
The creature froze in midair before dissolving into thousands of glowing particles.
Silence followed.
Everyone stared at her.
Including Caelan.
Elara lowered her trembling hand.
"I... I didn't mean..."
"You used light magic," one of the court mages whispered in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
King Aldric closed his eyes briefly.
"It has begun."
"What has?"
No one answered her.
The masked man laughed softly.
"So that's it."
He looked at Elara with open fascination.
"The heir has awakened."
Caelan stepped between them.
"You'll never touch her."
"Never?"
The stranger tilted his head.
"Guardian... do you know how many times I've heard those words?"
He slowly removed one of his gloves.
Ancient black markings covered his arm from wrist to shoulder.
"They said the same thing when they tried to protect the last Moon Princess."
Elara's heart skipped.
"The last... what?"
The stranger ignored her.
Instead, he looked directly at Caelan.
"You failed once."
A shadow passed across the Guardian's face.
"And you'll fail again."
Those words struck harder than any weapon.
Elara noticed it immediately.
For the first time, the unshakable Caelan looked... shaken.
Who was the last Moon Princess?
And why did the stranger believe Caelan had failed her?
Without warning, the masked man slammed his hand against the stone floor.
The ancient runes lining the tunnel turned black.
The ground trembled violently.
Cracks raced along the walls.
"Everyone out!" Caelan shouted.
"The tunnel is collapsing!"
Captain Rowan immediately pulled King Aldric toward the exit.
"Princess!"
Elara hesitated.
Caelan was still fighting alone.
"I'm not leaving him."
His eyes found hers across the battlefield.
There was no fear in them.
Only determination.
"You have to."
"No!"
The word escaped before she could stop it.
She barely knew this man.
So why did the thought of leaving him hurt?
Caelan's voice softened.
"If you stay..."
"They'll capture you."
"And if I leave?"
"I'll find you."
For a moment, the chaos around them disappeared.
There were only those four words.
I'll find you.
Something inside Elara's heart stirred.
A promise.
One she believed without knowing why.
Captain Rowan didn't give her another chance to argue.
He lifted her over his shoulder and ran toward the forest entrance.
"Put me down!"
"I'm following the Guardian's orders."
She struggled against him.
"Caelan!"
The Guardian didn't look back.
His full attention remained on the masked man.
The stranger watched Elara disappear into the forest.
Then he smiled.
"Run while you can, Princess."
His voice echoed through the collapsing tunnel.
"The forest belongs to us."
A tremendous roar shook the mountain.
The ceiling gave way.
Thousands of tons of stone crashed between Caelan and the others.
The passage collapsed completely.
Outside, beneath the silver moon, Rowan gently set Elara on her feet.
She turned toward the mountainside.
The entrance had vanished beneath a wall of rubble.
Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them.
"He's still in there."
No one answered.
The silence was enough.
Livia wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"We have to keep moving."
Elara couldn't look away.
Just hours ago, Caelan had been a stranger.
Now she found herself praying he was alive.
Deep beneath the collapsed mountain, the masked man slowly removed his silver mask.
His handsome face bore the scars of an ancient battle.
He looked at Caelan with a smile that held no warmth.
"It's been five hundred years."
Caelan's grip tightened around his sword.
"I knew you'd return eventually."
The man laughed.
"And I knew you'd still be protecting her bloodline."
He bowed with mocking elegance.
"My name is Lucien."
"The Shadow King's first general."
"And this time..."
"...I'm not leaving without the princess."
