Chapter 5

Unraveling the Threads Emma’s breath caught in her throat as the shadow in the doorway grew clearer. The figure that stepped into her apartment was not Adrian. It wasn’t anyone she recognized. But there was something in his eyes—cold, calculating, and full of authority—that made her stomach twist in fear. “Who the hell are you?” Emma asked, her voice shaky as she backed away from the door. The man’s lips curled into a smirk, but it wasn’t one of warmth or humor. It was a smirk of someone who had all the power and knew it. He was tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a tailored suit that screamed money and influence. His presence seemed to fill the room, making it feel smaller, more suffocating. “I’m someone who doesn’t take kindly to people getting in the way of business,” he said, his voice low and smooth, like velvet, but with an undercurrent of menace. Emma’s heart thudded in her chest as she took another step back. She wanted to run, but her feet felt like they were glued to the floor. “I don’t know what you want, but I don’t have anything to do with your business. I just want to be left alone.” The man took a slow step forward, his eyes never leaving hers. “That’s the problem, sweetheart. You don’t have a choice. Not anymore.” “Who sent you?” Emma’s mind raced, trying to make sense of this new threat. Was he connected to Adrian? Or was this someone else entirely? She didn’t know who to trust anymore. The man didn’t answer right away. He simply took another step toward her, and Emma’s pulse quickened. His presence was overwhelming, suffocating, and she could feel the weight of it pressing down on her chest. “I work for people you don’t want to cross,” he said finally, his voice even and calm. “And those people… they don’t like it when someone like you gets involved with Adrian Voss. You’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest, Emma. And now you’re going to have to face the consequences.” Emma’s stomach dropped. Her worst fears were beginning to take shape. This wasn’t just about Adrian anymore. This was something much bigger, something darker, and she had no idea how deep the rabbit hole went. “I don’t care about your business,” she said, trying to summon some courage, though her voice was trembling. “I just want to get out of this mess. I want to go back to my life.” The man’s eyes flickered with something like amusement, though his lips remained taut. “Your life is already over, Emma. You’re part of this now. And there’s no going back.” She could feel the panic rising in her chest, suffocating her, but she refused to let it show. Not to him. Not to anyone. She had to hold it together, even if her world was falling apart around her. “Where’s Adrian?” she asked, desperate for some kind of answer, some kind of understanding. The man didn’t reply immediately. Instead, he took another step toward her, closing the distance between them. Emma’s breath hitched in her throat, but she didn’t move. She had nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. “He’s busy,” the man said finally. “But trust me, you’ll see him again soon enough. And when you do… well, you won’t be asking any more questions.” Emma’s pulse raced as she processed his words. What did that mean? What was Adrian involved in, and why was she being dragged into it? She didn’t know, but the sinking feeling in her stomach told her that whatever it was, it wasn’t something she could escape from. The man took a step back, his eyes scanning the room before he turned his gaze back to her. “You have one choice, Emma. Stay out of the way, or things will get much worse for you.” “I’m not afraid of you,” she said, though the words felt weak in her mouth. The man smiled, but it was the smile of someone who knew better. “You should be.” Before she could react, he turned and walked toward the door. Emma’s heart was pounding in her chest, and she wanted to scream, to demand more answers, but she held herself back. She was in no position to fight back, not yet. As the man stepped into the hallway, he paused, glancing over his shoulder at her one last time. “You can’t hide from this, Emma. The clock is ticking.” And with that, he was gone, leaving Emma standing in the middle of her apartment, her mind whirling, her body frozen in place. She didn’t know what to do next. She didn’t know who she could trust, or even if she could trust herself. But one thing was certain—she was now fully entrenched in a world she had never wanted to be a part of. And there was no way out. A few minutes passed before Emma finally managed to collect herself enough to move. She grabbed her phone, her fingers trembling as she unlocked it. Another message flashed on the screen. I told you, Emma. You’re not in control here. The game has already begun. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the message. Adrian. Of course. He was always watching, always a step ahead. Just as she was about to respond, another knock echoed through the apartment. Her heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t ready for another confrontation. Not after what had just happened. But the knock came again, louder this time, insistent. With no choice left, Emma slowly approached the door, her mind racing with possibilities. Who could it be this time? Had the man who just left come back? Or was it someone even more dangerous? With a shaky breath, Emma opened the door, bracing herself for whatever came next. Standing on the other side of the door was none other than Adrian. But his expression wasn’t what she expected. There was no arrogance, no cool detachment. His eyes were wide, filled with something Emma couldn’t quite identify—a flicker of fear, maybe. And his words came out in a rush. “Get inside. Now.”
