THE FOURTH BEARER
Chapter Four
The Prince of Silver
Caelan took Elara through a concealed entrance beneath the palace.
The moment they entered, the atmosphere changed.
Guards stood along every corridor.
Their hands rested on their weapons.
People whispered as Elara passed.
But this time she noticed something different.
They weren't merely afraid.
Some looked at her with hope.
Others with hatred.
One elderly woman lowered her head as Elara walked by and whispered,
"After all these years."
Elara stopped.
"What did she mean?"
Caelan kept moving.
"You'll learn."
"You promised you'd tell me the truth."
"I did."
"Then tell me."
He turned.
"The truth is that I don't know everything."
That answer was different.
For the first time, Elara believed him.
Before she could respond, the doors ahead opened.
A group of royal guards entered.
Behind them walked a man dressed entirely in black and silver.
The stranger from the void.
Elara's breath caught.
He looked different here.
Not like a mysterious man standing at the edge of a magical rift.
Like someone who belonged at the center of this world.
The guards straightened as he approached.
Caelan immediately bowed his head.
Elara didn't.
The man's silver eyes settled on her.
"You're the one who brought her here."
It wasn't a question.
Caelan met his gaze.
"Yes, Your Highness."
Elara looked at him.
"Your Highness?"
The man's attention shifted to her.
"I am Prince Evren."
His voice was calm.
Measured.
Every word seemed chosen before he spoke it.
Elara folded her arms.
"So you're a prince."
"Unfortunately."
Caelan coughed, suspiciously like he was hiding a laugh.
Evren glanced at him.
Caelan immediately became serious again.
Elara looked between them.
"How many secrets are people planning to keep from me?"
Evren stepped closer.
"Fewer than you think."
That surprised her.
He looked at the mark on her wrist.
"May I?"
Elara hesitated.
Then she held out her arm.
Evren didn't touch the mark.
He only studied it.
"The Fourth Bearer."
"You know what it means?"
"Yes."
"Then tell me."
His gaze met hers.
"A Bearer can awaken the remnants of the Ancient Blood. The first three changed the course of this world."
"And the fourth?"
Evren's expression hardened.
"The fourth could change it again."
Elara pulled her arm back.
"That's not an answer."
"No."
His eyes remained on hers.
"It's a warning."
The palace bells began to ring.
Once.
Twice.
Then every flame in the corridor turned silver.
A voice moved through the palace.
The Fourth Bearer has awakened.
Evren's expression changed.
Not fear.
Calculation.
"How many?"
Caelan looked toward the windows.
"Too many."
Evren drew his sword.
For the first time, Elara saw what Caelan had already understood.
This wasn't a ceremonial palace.
It was preparing for war.
Chapter Five
The Blood Remembers
The first explosion shook the palace before anyone could explain what was happening.
Elara stumbled.
Evren caught her arm.
"Stay close."
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere they can't reach you."
"That's what everyone keeps saying."
She pulled away.
"I'm done being moved around like luggage."
Evren stopped.
For a moment, something almost amused appeared in his eyes.
"You have no idea how much trouble you are."
"Good."
Caelan looked between them.
"I already regret bringing you both into the same room."
Elara almost laughed.
The sound died when another explosion shook the palace.
A guard ran toward them.
"Your Highness, the eastern wall has fallen."
Evren's expression became cold.
"How many?"
"At least fifty."
"Seal the lower halls."
"And the Bearer?"
Evren looked at Elara.
"She stays with me."
Elara's heart skipped.
Not because she trusted him.
Because something about those words felt familiar.
Then pain exploded through her wrist.
She cried out.
The silver mark ignited.
Images flooded her mind.
A woman beneath a crimson moon.
Eight banners burning.
A palace collapsing.
A man with silver eyes kneeling in the ashes.
His hands were covered in blood.
He was holding someone.
Her.
Elara gasped.
The vision changed.
A different room.
A different century.
The same silver eyes.
The same grief.
The same man.
Waiting.
Searching.
Always searching.
Elara fell forward.
Evren caught her.
"Elara."
She looked up at him.
Tears blurred her vision.
"Why do I know you?"
Something in his face broke.
Only for a second.
Then it was gone.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"Yes."
The honesty stunned her.
Evren's voice dropped.
"But not about what you think."
Elara stared at him.
He looked toward the burning city beyond the windows.
"Your bloodline was hunted because the Ancient Blood can restore what was lost."
"What was lost?"
"The old empire."
"And what does that have to do with me?"
Evren looked back at her.
"Everything."
A deafening roar shook the palace.
The doors at the end of the corridor exploded inward.
Dark figures poured through.
Caelan drew his sword.
Evren stepped in front of Elara.
She saw the silver light gathering beneath his skin.
Not magic.
Something older.
Something that answered the mark on her wrist.
Caelan looked at her.
"Whatever happens, don't let them take you."
Elara's heart hammered.
"Who are they?"
Evren raised his sword.
"The ones who have spent centuries making sure the Bearers never survive long enough to remember."
Elara stared at him.
"Remember what?"
Evren's silver eyes met hers.
"The truth."
Then the palace went dark.
And somewhere beneath the ancient foundations, something woke.
Chapter Six
The Choice
Elara woke to the sound of rain.
For a moment, she didn't remember where she was.
Then the unfamiliar stone ceiling came into focus.
The strange forest.
The silver-eyed man.
The attack.
The impossible world beyond the wall.
Memory returned in fragments, each one leaving her more confused than the last.
She pushed herself upright.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
"Don't."
The voice came from across the room.
The silver-eyed man stood beside the window.
He was dressed differently now, without the armor she'd seen during the attack. Dark clothing fitted his broad frame, and a silver blade rested against his hip.
Elara's eyes narrowed.
"You."
His gaze met hers.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like I've been kidn*pped into a nightmare."
Something flickered across his face.
"You're not a prisoner."
"Funny. Because I don't remember agreeing to come here."
He didn't answer.
That irritated her more than anything.
Elara swung her legs over the side of the bed.
He immediately stepped forward.
She raised a hand.
"Don't."
He stopped.
Good.
For the first time since she had fallen through that impossible doorway, Elara felt like she had control over something.
"Where am I?"
"The Kingdom of Veyra."
The name meant nothing to her.
"And where exactly is Veyra?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"Not your world."
Elara stared at him.
She should have panicked.
Instead, she laughed once.
It wasn't funny.
"So I'm trapped."
"Temporarily."
"That's what the kidnappers say."
His jaw tightened.
"My name is Evren."
She studied him.
"Evren."
He nodded.
"And you know my name."
"Yes."
"How?"
Another silence.
Elara stood.
This time, Evren didn't try to stop her.
"Everyone keeps looking at me like I'm supposed to understand something," she said. "I don't. I don't know this place. I don't know you. I don't know why those creatures attacked me."
Evren's expression hardened.
"They weren't attacking you."
Elara stared at him.
"They chased me through a portal."
"They were trying to prevent you from reaching this kingdom."
"That's supposed to make me feel better?"
"No."
At least he was honest.
Elara walked toward the window.
Beyond the glass stretched a city unlike anything she'd ever seen.
Towering stone buildings rose beneath a violet-grey sky. Bridges connected buildings high above the streets. Strange lights floated through the air, illuminating paths without flames.
And people moved below.
Humans.
Or almost human.
She noticed pointed ears on some. Strange markings on others.
Her stomach twisted.
"This is real."
"Yes."
Elara placed her hand against the glass.
"Then I need to go home."
Evren looked away.
"You may not be able to."
She turned sharply.
"What does that mean?"
"The doorway that brought you here is gone."
Her heart dropped.
"No."
"It cannot simply be reopened."
"Then find a way."
"We are trying."
"No." Elara stepped toward him. "You're trying to figure out what I am."
His eyes narrowed.
She pointed at him.
"Everyone here knows something about me that I don't."
Evren didn't deny it.
That was enough.
Elara's anger burned hotter than her fear.
"Tell me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because if I tell you too much before you're ready, you may not survive what comes next."
She laughed bitterly.
"I've already survived falling through another universe."
Evren moved closer.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain it."
He stopped inches away.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then a loud horn sounded outside.
Evren's expression changed instantly.
He turned toward the door.
"What is it?"
"Stay here."
Elara almost laughed.
"Absolutely not."
"Elara."
She followed him.
"No more being locked in rooms while everyone else decides what happens to me."
He looked back at her.
Something almost like respect appeared in his eyes.
Then the doors burst open.
A guard stumbled inside.
"My lord."
Evren's hand went to his sword.
"What happened?"
"They found the breach."
Elara's blood went cold.
The guard looked directly at her.
"They're inside the city."
Evren stepped between Elara and the doorway.
"How many?"
"Too many."
Outside, screams erupted.
Elara's fear returned.
But this time, she didn't freeze.
She looked toward the window.
Then toward the sword at Evren's side.
"What do I do?"
Evren stared at her.
"Stay behind me."
Elara shook her head.
"No."
His expression hardened.
"Elara—"
"If they're here because of me, then hiding behind you isn't going to make this stop."
A strange silence fell between them.
For the first time, Evren looked at her not as someone he needed to protect.
But as someone who had made a choice.
Another explosion shook the building.
Elara flinched.
Then something inside her answered.
A pulse of silver light moved beneath her skin.
Evren saw it.
His face went completely still.
"Impossible."
Elara looked down at her hands.
The light disappeared.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Because outside the window, something enormous moved through the streets.
And somewhere beyond the city walls, a voice whispered through the rain.
"The Fourth Bearer has been chosen."
Elara looked at Evren.
"What does that mean?"
His eyes met hers.
And for the first time, she saw genuine fear in them.
"It means," he said quietly, "they know you're here."
