Chapter 3: Seeds of Doubt

219 Words
Lira retreated deeper into the forest, her paws crunching softly against the fallen leaves. Maya’s words echoed in her mind, each syllable a dagger aimed at her fragile confidence. She stopped near a stream, staring at her reflection in the water. The wolf that stared back was strong in appearance, but she felt like a ghost of who she once was. Kael found her there, his silver fur glowing in the moonlight as he approached. “You disappeared quickly after the meeting,” he said, his tone calm but laced with concern. “I didn’t want to be in the way,” Lira replied softly, avoiding his gaze. Kael stepped closer, lowering his head to meet her eyes. “You’re not in the way, Lira. You’re my mate, and this pack will respect that.” His words warmed her, but doubt still lingered. “Maya doesn’t think so,” she murmured. Kael’s ears flicked back briefly at the mention of her name. “Maya wants power, not what’s best for the pack. Don’t let her words take root.” He nuzzled her gently, a rare moment of tenderness from the fierce Alpha. Lira closed her eyes, leaning into him. She wanted to believe him, but the whispers were growing louder—and she wasn’t sure she could silence them.
