Chapter 7: The Trap

272 Words
Despite her growing confidence, Lira couldn’t ignore the undercurrent of hostility that Maya continued to stir. The she-wolf’s presence was like a storm cloud on the horizon—always looming, always threatening. Kael, too, sensed the unease within the pack. He spent his days ensuring border security and his nights comforting Lira, reminding her that her place beside him was unshakable. But Maya had no intention of letting her schemes unravel so easily. One night, during a gathering under the full moon, Maya set her trap. She approached Lira with an air of feigned kindness. “Lira,” she said smoothly, “the pack is starting to notice your strength. Perhaps you’re finally proving you’re worthy.” Lira bristled at the condescension but held her ground. “I don’t need your approval, Maya.” Maya’s smile was sharp. “Of course not. But actions speak louder than words. Why not show the pack what you’re truly capable of? Prove it, once and for all.” Before Lira could respond, Maya howled loudly, drawing the pack’s attention. “A rival wolf was spotted near our borders earlier. Perhaps Lira would like to take the lead in tracking them down?” Kael’s growl cut through the gathering. “This is not your call, Maya.” But the pack was watching, their curiosity piqued. Lira glanced at Kael, her heart pounding. “I’ll do it,” she said firmly. Maya’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction. “Good luck, Lira. You’ll need it.” As Lira left the gathering, the forest felt darker than ever before. Little did she know, she was walking straight into Maya’s trap.
