Darkness swallowed Westbridge Academy completely.
The emergency lights had finally died, leaving only the terrifying crimson glow of the enormous moon outside to shine through shattered windows. Rain hammered against the school endlessly while thunder shook the sky overhead like an approaching war drum.
The hallway smelled like smoke, blood, and burning electricity.
Kai stood frozen beside Orion while his heartbeat pounded violently against his ribs. Tiny sparks of blue lightning snapped across his fingertips uncontrollably, flashing brighter every few seconds.
None of this felt real.
An hour ago, they had been normal students worrying about homework, classes, and weekend plans.
Now monsters were crawling through their school.
And somehow they had powers.
Jax’s flames lit up part of the dark hallway as he looked around nervously. Please tell me this is some insane hallucination.
It isn’t, Orion answered coldly.
Another violent tremor shook the building.
The walls groaned painfully.
Somewhere downstairs, something massive roared.
The sound vibrated through the floor itself.
Lyra instinctively moved closer to Kai. Even in the darkness, he could see fear in her eyes now. Real fear.
What did you mean earlier? she asked Orion quietly. About a seal breaking?”
Orion remained silent for a moment.
Like he was deciding how much to tell them.
Then
Booooom.
A deafening explosion erupted beneath the hallway.
The floor cracked open violently.
Everyone stumbled backward as black smoke burst upward from the shattered tiles like a volcanic eruption. The air instantly became freezing cold.
And then came the hands.
Thin black hands clawed their way out from the darkness below.
One after another.
Dozens of them.
Kai’s stomach twisted painfully.
The creatures slowly pulled themselves upward from the hole in the ground, their glowing red eyes shining through the smoke. Their bodies looked almost human but stretched unnaturally long, with twisted limbs and mouths filled with needle like teeth.
Lyra covered her mouth in horror.
Oh my god
The Void Crawlers, Orion said grimly. They’ve breached the seal.
One of the creatures tilted its head sharply toward Kai.
Then another.
And another.
Every glowing eye locked onto him.
The Heirone hissed.
The Storm Heir
Kai stepped backward slowly. “Why do they keep calling me that?!”
Nobody answered.
The creatures suddenly screamed together.
Then they attacked.
The hallway exploded into chaos instantly.
Jax reacted first, throwing both hands forward as bright flames burst violently from his palms. Fire slammed into two creatures and sent them crashing into the lockers.
YES okay wait this is actually terrifying!p
Elena raised her arms instinctively.
Ice spread rapidly across the floor beneath the creatures, freezing several of them in place before sharp spikes erupted upward from the ground.
Crack!
The frozen creatures shattered apart instantly.
Zion’s shadows burst outward next.
Dark smoke spiraled across the hallway like living snakes, wrapping around several monsters before slamming them violently into the walls.
Lyra’s silver moonlight flashed through the darkness beautifully as glowing chains formed around another creature’s throat.
Kai stared at his friends in shock.
They were fighting.
Actually fighting.
Like warriors.
Meanwhile Orion moved through the hallway like death itself.
His golden blade flashed through the darkness impossibly fast.
Every strike destroyed another creature instantly.
No hesitation.
No fear.
One Void Crawler leaped toward Kai suddenly.
Kai raised his hands instinctively.
Nothing happened.
The creature slammed into him hard.
Pain exploded through his shoulder as he crashed into the lockers.
KAI! Lyra screamed.
The creature raised its claws
Then blue lightning exploded from Kai’s body.
Boooom!
Electricity tore through the hallway violently, blasting the monster backward through the air. Several other creatures nearby were thrown into the walls as sparks burst everywhere.
Kai stared at his own hands breathing heavily.
The power felt stronger now.
Much stronger.
And somehow familiar.
Like it had always existed inside him.
The remaining creatures hesitated.
Then something strange happened.
They bowed.
Every single creature lowered itself before Kai.
The hallway suddenly became silent except for the storm outside.
Even Orion stopped moving.
The Storm King one creature whispered fearfully.
No Orion breathed.
Kai frowned in confusion. What are they talking about?!
Suddenly thunder roared directly above the school.
Cracccck!
A massive bolt of lightning shattered through the ceiling.
Students screamed somewhere nearby.
Electricity surged wildly across the hallway ceiling before crashing downward directly toward Kai.
Time slowed.
Lyra’s terrified expression.
Jax yelling something.
Orion reaching toward him.
Then
The lightning struck.
Boooom!
Blue light consumed everything.
The explosion shattered windows across the school. Lockers ripped from the walls while electricity spiraled violently through the air like living dragons.
Pain surged through Kai’s entire body.
But it wasn’t normal pain.
It felt ancient.
Powerful.
Like something inside him was waking up.
Symbols suddenly appeared across his arms glowing blue markings spreading beneath his skin like lightning itself.
And then the visions came.
A kingdom floating above clouds.
Armies made of light.
Dragons flying through storms.
A man sitting upon a golden throne while lightning burned around his body.
The man slowly raised his head.
And somehow
He had Kai’s face.
A deep voice echoed through endless darkness.
The king has returned.
Kai screamed.
Lightning exploded outward again.
Boooooom!
The entire hallway shattered apart from the force.
The Void Crawlers fled in terror.
Kai collapsed onto one knee breathing heavily while electricity danced wildly around him.
Silence followed.
Rain poured through the broken ceiling above.
Orion stared at Kai with disbelief written across his face.
“That power” he whispered.
Kai slowly looked up.
His eyes glowed electric blue.
What is happening to me?
Before Orion could answer
A horrifying roar echoed from deep beneath the school.
Louder than before.
Old
er.
Angrier.
The ground trembled violently.
And high above Westbridge Academy
The giant crimson moon cracked slowly down the center.
