CHAPTER 15: ECHOES OF THE FALL

Chapter 15: Echoes of the Fall The rain had settled into a steady, rhythmic drumbeat against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the master suite as the last hours of darkness stretched across the estate. Inside, the quiet was absolute. Silas remained awake long after Seraphina’s breathing had slowed into the deep, uninterrupted rhythm of true exhaustion. His arm stayed locked around her waist, anchoring her against him, his mind working through the tactical aftermath of a night that had completely rewritten the map of the city’s underworld. Julian Laurent was officially on the run, his bank accounts frozen in Geneva, his private security apparatus scattered into chaos, and his influence reduced to ashes in a single evening. But in the world Silas inhabited, a wounded empire was often more dangerous than a thriving one. Desperate men made reckless moves, and Silas had no intention of allowing Julian or any lingering loyalists to take a single breath near Seraphina. Slowly, carefully, so as not to disturb her, Silas slipped out from beneath the heavy silk sheets. Seraphina stirred only slightly, letting out a faint sigh as her hand reached out across the mattress, searching instinctively for his warmth. Silas paused, his gaze softening as he leaned down to pull the coverlet neatly over her bare shoulders before reaching for his dark trousers and a crisp linen shirt from the dressing room. He stepped silently out onto the second-floor gallery overlooking the estate’s grand marble foyer. Down below, Marcus was already waiting, standing beside the shadow of the arched entryway in a sleek grey suit, his phone glowing in his hand. Silas descended the grand staircase with quiet, heavy steps, his boots making almost no sound on the polished stone. "Report," Silas commanded, his voice dropping into the low, razor-sharp register of a commander entering a war room. Marcus looked up instantly, stepping forward and handing Silas a dark leather portfolio containing printed satellite dispatches and encrypted financial ledgers. "Julian’s private jet cleared European airspace three hours ago. He touched down in Zurich under a diplomatic passport alias. He’s taking shelter in the Laurent family estate near Lake Zurich, but he fled with fewer than six bodyguards and no direct liquid capital." Silas skimmed the dispatches, his dark eyes registering every detail with icy efficiency. "And the captains here in the city?" "Panicked," Marcus replied smoothly. "Victor’s old lieutenants tried to seize the docks in the eastern district at midnight, but our perimeter teams intercepted them. Once news spread that Seraphina had personally signed off on the liquidation of the Geneva accounts, the remaining syndicate directors realized Julian’s reign was officially over. They aren't loyal to a ghost. They want a meeting with you and Mrs. Thorne at dawn." Silas closed the folder with a sharp, decisive snap. "They will get their meeting. But they will meet her as the sovereign head of the Laurent assets, not as my captive. Make sure the boardroom in Thorne Tower is locked down. Every director is to be swept for weapons twice before either of us enters the room." "Understood, boss," Marcus said, nodding once. "I'll have the motorcade prepped for seven in the morning." Silas stood near the high arched window of the foyer, looking out over the dark estate grounds as Marcus turned to execute his orders. The private security details were patrolling the perimeter in silent pairs, their tactical rifles slung low across their chests. Everything was falling into place exactly as planned, yet the shift inside Silas felt entirely different from any territory grab he had executed before. For years, every move he made was driven by cold strategy, tactical control, and the ruthless preservation of the Thorne legacy. But now, every decision was tied to the woman sleeping upstairs in his bed. Seraphina wasn't just a partner in this bloody triumph; she was the axis around which his entire world was beginning to revolve. He walked back upstairs, his footsteps quiet against the carpeted hallway. Opening the heavy mahogany doors of the master suite, he found Seraphina standing near the edge of the bed, wrapped in a plush silk robe, her dark hair tumbling loosely over her shoulders as she looked toward the balcony. She turned as he walked in, her dark eyes catching his in the soft morning light. "You left the bed," she said softly, her voice still laced with sleep. "Business doesn't sleep, princess," Silas said, closing the distance between them and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his body. He leaned down and kissed her lips—slow, deep, and intoxicating—before trailing a path of heat down the arch of her throat to the sensitive hollow of her neck. His hands moved with possessive ease, untying the sash and letting her plush silk robe pool uselessly down at her feet. Seraphina gasped softly, a sweet, breathless laugh escaping her lips as she leaned back against his chest. "I'm still so sore, Silas," she murmured, her words dissolving into a soft giggle directly against his mouth. Silas froze, a heavy, frustrated sigh escaping him. He pulled back just enough to run a hand through his dark hair, his fingers tangling in the strands as he looked down at her with darkened, ravenous eyes. "You're playing with fire, princess," he growled softly, a rueful half-smile tugging at his lips. "Let's get you back to sleep before I lose my mind and do something to you right here. God knows I can't get enough of you." Chuckling softly, he scooped her up into his arms, ignoring her light protest, and gently carried her back to the bed. Settling her beneath the soft silk sheets, Silas slipped off his shirt, slid into bed right beside her, and pulled her tightly against his chest, wrapping his heavy arm over her waist as she rested her head over his heart. "Get some sleep, Seraphina," he whispered into her hair, kissing the top of her head. "Dawn comes fast, and we have an empire to run together."
