The sleek black SUV sped through the night, its tinted windows concealing the tension within. Aria sat rigidly in the backseat, her eyes darting between Zane at the wheel and the unconscious form of Damon's attacker slumped beside her.
"Where are we going?" Aria demanded, breaking the taut silence.
Zane's eyes met hers in the rearview mirror. "Somewhere safe. We need to regroup and figure out our next move."
Aria's mind raced, Damon's warning echoing in her thoughts. Don't trust anyone. Not even Zane. But if she couldn't trust Zane, who could she trust?
The SUV turned off the main road, winding through a series of increasingly narrow streets. Just as Aria was about to demand answers again, the vehicle came to a stop in front of an abandoned warehouse.
"We're here," Zane announced, killing the engine.
Aria's wolf bristled, sensing danger. "And where exactly is 'here'?"
Before Zane could answer, the warehouse door slid open, revealing a group of heavily armed werewolves. Aria's heart sank. This was a trap.
In one fluid motion, she grabbed the knife hidden in her boot and pressed it against the unconscious woman's throat. "Drive," she growled at Zane. "Now."
Zane's eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed with grudging respect. "You're smarter than I gave you credit for, little wolf. But you're making a mistake."
"The only mistake was trusting you," Aria spat. "Now drive, or your little assassin here gets a new smile."
For a tense moment, Aria thought Zane might refuse. Then, with a resigned sigh, he started the engine. The SUV peeled away from the warehouse, leaving the armed werewolves shouting in their wake.
"I hope you have a plan," Zane said as he navigated the streets at breakneck speed. "Because you've just made some very powerful enemies."
Aria's mind whirled. She didn't have a plan, not really. But she knew one thing for certain – she needed to get to Damon.
"Take me to him," she ordered. "And don't even think about trying anything. I'm not afraid to use this knife."
Zane's laugh was without humor. "Oh, I believe you. But you're walking into a situation you don't understand, Aria. The attack on Damon, the engagement, the pack wars – it's all connected. And it goes deeper than you could imagine."
"Then enlighten me," Aria challenged.
Zane was silent for a long moment, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Finally, he spoke. "What do you know about the Alpha Prime?"
Aria frowned. "The first werewolf? It's just a legend."
"It's more than that," Zane said, his voice low. "The Alpha Prime's bloodline still exists. And Damon... he's the last living descendant."
The revelation hit Aria like a physical blow. "That's impossible. If Damon was the Alpha Prime's descendant, he'd be the most powerful werewolf alive. He'd-"
"Unite all the packs under one rule," Zane finished. "Bring peace to the supernatural world. You're starting to see the problem now, aren't you?"
Aria's mind raced. If what Zane was saying was true, it changed everything. "The engagement," she breathed. "It wasn't just about ending a pack war. It was about keeping Damon from claiming his birthright."
Zane nodded grimly. "There are powerful people who benefit from keeping the packs divided. They've known about Damon's heritage for years, working behind the scenes to keep him from realizing his true potential."
"And where do you fit into all this?" Aria demanded.
"I was sent to protect him," Zane admitted. "But I failed. I thought by keeping you away from him, I could prevent the mate bond from awakening his dormant powers. I was wrong."
The SUV swerved suddenly, narrowly avoiding a spray of bullets. Aria looked back to see three motorcycles in pursuit, their riders armed and gaining fast.
"Hold on," Zane growled, his eyes glowing gold as he pushed the SUV to its limits.
The chase that ensued was heart-stopping. Zane's driving was nothing short of miraculous as he wove through traffic, the motorcycles hot on their tail. Aria clung to her seat, her heart in her throat, the unconscious assassin bouncing beside her with each sharp turn.
Just when it seemed they might escape, a black van appeared ahead, blocking their path. Zane cursed, slamming on the brakes. The SUV spun, tires screeching, before coming to a stop mere inches from the van.
In the sudden silence, Aria could hear her own ragged breathing. Then the van's door slid open, revealing a face she never expected to see.
"Mom?" Aria gasped.
Evelyn Hart, Aria's mother and the Beta of their home pack, stood before them, her expression a mix of relief and fury. "Aria, thank the Goddess. Are you hurt?"
Before Aria could respond, Zane was out of the SUV, placing himself between Aria and her mother. "Evelyn," he said, his voice tight. "I should have known you'd be involved."
"Step aside, Zane," Evelyn ordered. "You've done enough damage."
Aria's head spun. Her mother knew Zane? Was involved in... whatever this was? "Mom, what's going on? How do you know Zane?"
Evelyn's eyes softened as they landed on her daughter. "Oh, sweetheart. There's so much you don't know. About your father, about our family's legacy... about your true potential."
"What are you talking about?" Aria demanded, her voice rising with frustration and fear.
"Your father wasn't just any wolf, Aria," Evelyn said softly. "He was Damon Blackwood's older brother. Which makes you-"
"The true heir of the Alpha Prime," Zane finished, his voice filled with awe and dawning realization.
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Aria stumbled, her mind reeling from the implications. She was Damon's niece. His mate. The heir to a power she couldn't begin to comprehend.
As if on cue, pain exploded behind Aria's eyes. She fell to her knees, a scream tearing from her throat as images flooded her mind – memories that weren't her own, knowledge of a world hidden from her for twenty-three years.
The last thing Aria saw before darkness claimed her was her mother's worried face and Zane's look of grim determination. Then, blissful unconsciousness swept her away, leaving the chaos of her new reality behind.
