Episode 4: The Child Between Us

1329 Words
The next morning, Amara sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the hospital scan in her hands. Four months. Sixteen weeks. A tiny life was growing inside her. Yet the man whose blood flowed through that child was the same man who had shattered her heart only weeks earlier. She didn't know whether to cry or pray. Her mother's voice came from the doorway. "Amara." She quickly wiped her face. "Yes, Mum?" "Are you still going to see Ethan today?" Amara lowered her eyes. "I think I have to." Her mother walked into the room and sat beside her. "You're not going because you still love him, are you?" Amara was silent. Her mother sighed. "Whatever decision you make, don't make it because you're afraid of raising a child alone." "I know." "You have your family." Amara nodded, but tears filled her eyes. "I just never imagined my life would turn out this way." Her mother held her hand. "Sometimes life takes us somewhere we never planned to go." Amara looked down at her stomach. "I don't want my baby to grow up without a father." Her mother didn't answer immediately. Then she said quietly, "A child needs a responsible father, not merely a man who gave him or her a biological connection." The words stayed with Amara. Still, she knew she had to give Ethan a chance to respond. Not for herself. For their unborn child. --- Ethan arrived at Amara's parents' home that afternoon. He looked different. The confident smile was gone. His shirt was slightly wrinkled, his eyes were red, and for once, he seemed genuinely frightened. When Amara stepped into the sitting room, Ethan immediately stood. "Amara." She didn't answer. He took a step toward her. "I am sorry." She looked at him coldly. "You've said that before." "I know." "You apologized after I caught you with that woman." "I know." "And then you kept doing the same thing." Ethan lowered his head. "I made mistakes." "Those weren't mistakes, Ethan. They were choices." He swallowed hard. "I know I hurt you." "You didn't just hurt me." She placed a trembling hand over her stomach. "You hurt the family we could have had." Ethan's eyes followed her hand. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then he whispered, "Can I see the scan?" Amara hesitated before handing him the folded paper. His fingers shook as he opened it. The moment he saw the image, his face changed. He stared at the tiny shape on the page. "That's my baby?" Amara nodded. He sat down slowly. "I didn't know." "Neither did I." He looked up at her. "How far?" "Four months." He stared at the image again. Four months. The reality finally settled over him. He was going to be a father. For the first time, Ethan looked genuinely overwhelmed. Then he stood and walked toward Amara. "Marry me." Amara froze. "What?" "Marry me." She stared at him in disbelief. "You've got to be joking." "I'm serious." "You cheated on me, humiliated me, and broke my heart. And now you're asking me to marry you?" "I know what I did." "No. You don't." Tears filled her eyes. "You don't know what it felt like to discover another woman in your apartment." Ethan looked devastated. "I'll change." "That's what you said before." "This time will be different." Amara looked away. "Why?" He didn't answer immediately. Then he said, "Because there's a child involved." Her heart sank. "So you're marrying me because I'm pregnant?" "No." "Then why?" "Because I still love you." She almost laughed. "Love?" She wiped her tears. "Your definition of love is very different from mine." Ethan fell silent. --- That evening, both families met. Amara's father sat quietly in his chair while Ethan's parents listened carefully. Nobody pretended the situation was simple. Amara's father looked directly at Ethan. "My daughter loved you sincerely." "I know, sir." "You hurt her." "I know." "You have one opportunity to prove that you are serious." Ethan nodded. "I am serious." His mother reached over and placed her hand on Amara's. "Nobody wants a broken marriage," she said gently. "But marriage is more than feelings. Ethan has to understand that." Amara lowered her eyes. "I don't even know if I can trust him again." Her mother looked at her. "You don't have to forget what happened." Her voice softened. "But if you choose to marry him, make sure you're doing it with your eyes open." Amara looked across the room at Ethan. He was staring at her with an expression she hadn't seen before. Fear. Not fear of losing his freedom. Fear of losing her. She wondered whether that fear would finally make him change. --- The wedding preparations began quickly. There was no extravagant ceremony. There wasn't enough time. They simply wanted to make the arrangement official before Amara's pregnancy became too obvious. Amara spent countless nights wondering if she was making the biggest mistake of her life. Sometimes Ethan seemed determined to prove her wrong. He called every morning. He accompanied her to hospital appointments. He bought her fruits and medications. He spoke about their unborn child with excitement. "You'll see," he told her one evening. "I'll be the best father." Amara smiled faintly. "I hope so." He touched her stomach gently. "I already love this baby." For the first time in weeks, Amara allowed herself to imagine a happy future again. Perhaps people really could change. Perhaps Ethan had simply needed something important enough to make him grow up. Perhaps their child would bring them closer. Perhaps their marriage would become the beginning of something beautiful. She wanted to believe it. She needed to believe it. --- Their wedding day arrived quietly. Amara wore a beautiful lace gown chosen by her mother. Her hands trembled as she stood before the mirror. "You look beautiful," her mother whispered. Amara looked at her reflection. A bride. A pregnant bride. A woman marrying the man who had once broken her heart. She touched her stomach. "We'll be okay," she whispered. "I'm doing this for you." When she walked down the aisle and saw Ethan waiting for her, his eyes filled with tears. For a brief moment, everything else disappeared. The warnings. The betrayal. The fear. All of it. There was only the man standing before her. The man she had loved for so long. The father of her child. When they exchanged their vows, Ethan squeezed her hand. "I promise I will never hurt you again." Amara looked into his eyes. She wanted to believe him. Desperately. So she nodded. "I believe you." --- That night, Amara moved into Ethan's family home. His parents had agreed that the young couple could stay with them until Ethan became financially stable enough to rent a place of their own. Amara entered the house carrying her small suitcase. His mother welcomed her warmly. "You are home now." Home. The word made Amara smile. Maybe this was finally the fresh beginning she had prayed for. But as the night grew darker, Ethan's phone began to ring repeatedly. He glanced at the screen. His expression changed. Amara noticed. "Who is calling?" He quickly turned the phone face down. "Nobody important." She stared at him. Something inside her tightened. She had heard that answer before. "Let me see your phone." Ethan's expression hardened. "Why?" Amara's heart began beating faster. Because she knew that look. She had seen it before. And suddenly, the beautiful promises of that morning felt very far away. Then Ethan's phone vibrated again. This time, a message appeared clearly on the screen. Congratulations on your wedding, lover. When are you coming to see me? Amara stared at the message. Her heart stopped. She slowly turned toward her new husband. "Ethan..." He said nothing. The room suddenly felt unbearably cold. Was their marriage truly a new beginning—or had Amara just married the same man she had desperately tried to escape?
