July The frantic squeal of the gurney wheels cut through the hospital corridors as overhead fluorescent lights flashed by in a dizzying blur. I lay flat on my back, staring up at the endless ceiling. The harsh, blinding white glare made my eyes burn. Someone pushed an IV line into my arm, and a cold fluid surged through my veins. Suddenly, my body felt weightless. I felt like I was floating just a few inches above the operating table. "Wait—stop the gurney!" The young nurse from the ambulance darted out from the corner of the pre-op room. "What is it?" a gravelly voice barked back. It sounded like the anesthesiologist. "Her blood panel just came back. Her HCG levels are positive." A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. "She’s pregnant." Those two words echoed in the sterile air, freezing the room in time. "Are you certain?" someone asked. "Confirmed. She's about three weeks along." A warm, gentle hand cupped my forehead. I forced my heavy eyelids open, finding the young nurse leaning over me. Her eyes were wide, brimming with genuine worry and compassion. Her ID badge blurred in my field of vision, but I finally made out her name as Enya Vance. "Ma'am," Enya whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Can you hear me? Blink once if you can." I managed a single, weak blink. "I need to tell you something incredibly important. You are just over three weeks pregnant. The spinal surgery you need requires general anesthesia and heavy stabilization, which poses a massive risk to your baby. In the worst-case scenario... it will cause a miscarriage." Her hand slid down from my forehead, gently grasping my right index finger, the only part of my body I could actually move. "We need to know what you want to do. Do you want to try and save the baby, even if it means postponing parts of the surgery and putting your own life in extreme danger? Or—" She didn't finish the sentence. My breathing hitched. My heart rate skyrocketed on the monitor, the red blood-oxygen levels flashing wildly as the alarms began to beep frantically. My eyes were pleading and Enya saw right through me. "You want to tell me something, don't you?" Enya quickly knelt down, bringing her face level with mine. "You can't speak, but you can blink. Let's make a deal—one blink for yes, two blinks for no. Do you understand?" I blinked once. "Do you want to save your baby? Even if we delay the surgery? Even if it risks your life?" I blinked. Hard. Desperately. Yes. Absolutely yes. Down at the bottom of that dark cliff, I thought my baby and I had been crushed together. But now, against all odds, I was being told this tiny miracle was still there, fighting against fate with its own fragile heartbeat. Enya straightened up, biting her lip, torn by the sheer weight of my choice. "Hold on..." she murmured. A moment later, the automatic doors slid open, and a tall man in a white lab coat stepped into the room. "What's the hold-up, Enya?" "Dr. Vance," Enya turned to him, her voice holding an instinctive plea for guidance. "The patient is three weeks pregnant. She refuses to risk the baby and is denying general anesthesia. But I can't get proper informed consent. Her vocal cords are severely damaged. We established a blinking system, but this call is way over my head. You're the attending physician. What should we do?" Dr. Vance walked over, stopping right at the edge of the operating table. When he leaned down to look at me, a strange, electric jolt shot straight through my spine. It’s a phantom sensation that shouldn't have been possible given my injuries, but I feel it anyway. His eyes were green like Enya’s, but a deeper, mesmerizing shade of forest green that seemed to peer directly into my soul. For a split second, a scent like cedar washed over me, cutting through the sterile hospital smell and instantly grounding my chaotic panic. It was a bizarre, overwhelming wave of absolute safety, as if my soul recognized him before my mind even could. "I'm Dr. Killian Vance, your lead surgeon," he said. His voice was deep, and carried a commanding weight that inexplicably made my racing heart slow down. "I need to lay it all out for you," he continued, his tone clinical yet surprisingly gentle. "You've lost a critical amount of blood. We’ve stabilized your vitals, but we need to operate on your spine immediately. If we don't, you aren't just looking at permanent paralysis. Your internal organs are sustaining nerve damage. Postponing this will eventually cause your lungs and heart to fail." He paused, letting his words sink in, giving me a moment to process the grim reality. "Your baby is still holding on. But I have to give it to you straight: if we alter the anesthesia protocol to protect the pregnancy, the surgical risk to your life skyrocketed. We will be operating on a knife’s edge. As your doctor, I have to ask one last time: knowing that you might not survive this, do you still choose to protect your child?" I didn't hesitate for a single second. Joseph wanted me dead. He had thrown me off that cliff without a second thought. But this tiny life inside me was my flesh and blood—my only true family left. My adoptive parents had shown me that love was unconditional, and Teddy would have been the best uncle in the world. I would not abandon this innocent life to save my own skin. I blinked once. Firmly. Unwaveringly. Dr. Vance stared at me, his eyes softening into an expression of profound respect. He let out a long breath and slowly nodded. "I understand," Dr. Vance said softly. "You are a remarkably brave mother." He turned sharply to the surgical team, his tone shifting back to absolute authority. "Change the protocol. Reduce the fetus-toxic agents to the bare minimum and bring OB in for continuous, real-time fetal monitoring throughout the entire operation. It’s going to be a delicate, high-risk procedure, but if this mother refuses to give up on her child, we won't give up on either of them." Enya let out a breath she’d been holding, her eyes shining with admiration. The brilliant white surgical lights engulfed my vision once more as the modified anesthesia mask was placed over my nose and mouth. The last thing I saw before slipping into the dark was Enya mouthing the words, “Relax, ma’am. You are so brave, and we’re going to do everything to save you both.”
