Chapter Five: Across Enemy Lines

1001 Words
The forest was unnaturally quiet. Lyla walked several steps ahead of Kael, her mind struggling to make sense of everything the Moon Goddess had revealed. Destined mates. The words echoed relentlessly in her head. "No," she whispered to herself. "It can't be." Kael heard her but chose not to respond. He was wrestling with the same revelation. For generations, the Nightfang family had believed the Moon Goddess chose mates for a reason. The bond was sacred, impossible to break. Yet fate had chosen the daughter of his greatest enemy. Neither of them knew whether to accept it—or fight it. By noon, they reached the top of Raven's Ridge. From there, they could see the borders of both territories. Dark smoke curled into the sky. Lyla's heart skipped. "My village..." Kael's expression darkened. "No." He pointed farther east. "That's the border." Hundreds of warriors were gathering. Silver Claw warriors formed ranks on one side. Black Moon warriors stood opposite them. Weapons glinted beneath the afternoon sun. The war had already begun. "We're too late," Lyla whispered. Kael shook his head. "Not yet." "We still have time." He turned to her. "We must stop them before someone strikes the first blow." She nodded. Together, they hurried down the mountain. --- At the Silver Claw camp... Alpha Rowan stood before nearly three hundred warriors. His silver wolf paced restlessly beneath his skin. Every instinct told him something was wrong. He had raised Lyla since she was a child. She would never disappear willingly. Yet no trace of her had been found. A scout rode into camp. "Alpha!" Rowan stepped forward. "What news?" "The Black Moon Alpha has also disappeared." The camp fell silent. One elder scoffed. "A trick." Another nodded. "They're trying to confuse us." But Rowan wasn't convinced. If Kael was missing too... Perhaps the ambush had been exactly what it appeared to be. An attack against both packs. --- Across the border... Darius stood before Black Moon's warriors. "We hold this line." A young warrior growled. "They have our Alpha." "We attack now!" "No." Darius's voice rang across the field. "We attack only if necessary." Though he appeared calm, fear gnawed at him. Kael had never disappeared before. Not once. Hidden among the trees... A pair of crimson eyes watched both armies. The Shadow Fang leader smiled beneath his hood. "They're exactly where I want them." Beside him stood a young woman with long white hair. "My Lord..." "They still haven't attacked." "They will." He smiled confidently. "All it takes..." He pulled a silver arrow from his quiver. "...is one lie." --- Lyla and Kael finally reached the battlefield. The sight before them stole their breath. Hundreds of wolves stood ready for war. The tension was unbearable. One wrong move... Thousands would die. Kael stepped into the open. "Stop!" Every Black Moon warrior turned. "Alpha!" Darius's face filled with relief. "You live!" At the same moment, Lyla emerged beside him. "Father!" The Silver Claw warriors gasped. Alpha Rowan stared in disbelief. "Lyla..." For several seconds, no one spoke. Then an elder shouted, "She's standing beside the enemy Alpha!" Another warrior pointed. "He kidnapped her!" Lyla stepped forward. "No!" "Listen to me!" But her voice was drowned out by angry cries. Kael raised his hand. "No one draws a weapon!" Unfortunately... The Shadow Fang leader had been waiting for this moment. Hidden deep within the forest... He aimed the silver arrow. His target... Alpha Rowan. The arrow flew silently through the air. Lyla saw it first. "Father!" Without thinking, she ran. She pushed Rowan aside. The silver arrow struck her shoulder instead. Pain exploded through her body. She cried out and collapsed. "Lyla!" Everything happened at once. Kael reached her first. He caught her before she hit the ground. Blood stained her clothes. The silver embedded in the arrow immediately weakened her wolf. "No..." Kael whispered. He gently removed the arrow. Lyla screamed in agony. The wound refused to heal. "Silver," Darius muttered. "It's poisoned." Panic spread across both packs. Alpha Rowan knelt beside his daughter. "Lyla!" She struggled to open her eyes. "I'm... alright..." "You are not." Kael looked toward the forest. "Find the archer!" Dozens of wolves charged into the trees. But the Shadow Fang leader was already gone. --- The battlefield became strangely quiet. For the first time in history... The Alpha of Black Moon and the Alpha of Silver Claw knelt beside the same injured woman. Rowan looked at Kael. "You protected her." Kael nodded. "I always will." The words surprised even him. Rowan noticed. He also noticed the way Lyla instinctively reached for Kael's hand despite the pain. Something had changed. Something neither of them fully understood. --- The pack healer arrived quickly. She examined the wound. Her face became grave. "This poison..." She looked at the two Alphas. "...cannot be cured with ordinary herbs." Rowan's heart sank. "What do you mean?" "There is only one cure." "What is it?" The healer hesitated. Then she spoke quietly. "The Moon Blossom." Kael frowned. "That flower disappeared centuries ago." The healer nodded. "Not entirely." She looked toward the distant Frostpeak Mountains. "The last Moon Blossom grows in the Valley of Spirits." Silence. Every werewolf knew the stories. No one who entered the Valley of Spirits had ever returned alive. Lyla's breathing became weaker. The poison was spreading. Kael stood. "I'll bring it." Rowan looked at him. "You'll die." "Maybe." He looked down at Lyla's pale face. "But if I do nothing..." His voice softened. "...she certainly will." Without another word, Kael shifted into his massive black wolf. He looked at Lyla one last time. "I'll come back." Then he disappeared into the forest at full speed. Watching him vanish into the trees, Lyla managed the faintest smile before darkness claimed her. And far away, beneath the shadow of the Frostpeak Mountains, an ancient flower bloomed beneath the light of the moon—waiting for the Alpha willing to risk everything for the woman destiny had chosen for him.
