The rain showed no sign of stopping.
Thunder rumbled across the mountains as Lyla stood near the cabin door, watching sheets of rain pour from the dark sky. Every instinct told her to leave, yet she knew the forest outside was far more dangerous than the man behind her.
Kael quietly added another log to the fireplace.
Orange flames danced across the small room, pushing back the cold.
"You should warm yourself," he said without looking at her.
"I'm fine."
He didn't argue.
Instead, he removed his torn jacket and hung it near the fire to dry.
Lyla couldn't help noticing the fresh cuts covering his shoulders and arms. Some were deep enough to leave scars.
"You were injured protecting me," she said before she could stop herself.
Kael glanced at her.
"I would have done the same for anyone."
His answer annoyed her.
"So I'm just 'anyone'?"
A faint smile crossed his face.
"Right now, you're the future Alpha of a rival pack."
She folded her arms.
"Exactly."
Silence returned.
Hours passed.
The storm grew stronger.
The cabin creaked with every gust of wind.
Lyla sat near the fire, wrapping an old blanket around herself.
Her stomach growled.
She frowned.
Kael reached into a small cupboard and pulled out a cloth bag.
Inside were dried meat, bread, and a few apples.
"It isn't much."
She hesitated.
"What if it's poisoned?"
Kael laughed quietly.
"If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have saved your life twice today."
Embarrassed, she accepted the bread.
For several minutes, they ate in silence.
Finally, Lyla asked the question that had haunted her for years.
"Did you kill my parents?"
Kael froze.
The fire crackled between them.
"No."
His answer came without hesitation.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I expect you to decide for yourself."
"My father said—"
"Your father believes what he was told."
She frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Kael stared into the flames.
"The night your parents died..."
His voice became quieter.
"...I was sixteen years old."
Lyla blinked.
"What?"
"I wasn't Alpha."
"You weren't?"
"My father, Alpha Lucian, led Black Moon then."
She stared at him.
"No one ever told me that."
Kael smiled sadly.
"Because the truth is inconvenient."
Lyla's mind raced.
If Kael hadn't been Alpha...
Then who had ordered the attack?
She looked at him carefully.
"What really happened?"
Kael sighed deeply.
"My father and yours were trying to end the war."
She looked shocked.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
"They hated each other."
"No."
"They respected each other."
He stood and walked toward the window.
"They met secretly for almost a year."
"Planning peace."
Lyla felt her heart pounding.
"I don't believe you."
"I wouldn't either."
He reached into a leather pouch hanging from his belt.
Inside was an old silver pendant.
He handed it to her.
She examined it closely.
Her breath caught.
It bore the crest of the Silver Claw Pack.
"This belonged to your father."
She looked at him.
"How did you get this?"
"He gave it to my father."
Her eyes widened.
"As a symbol of trust."
She could barely breathe.
Everything she had believed suddenly felt uncertain.
Suddenly...
A loud growl echoed outside.
Both of them stood instantly.
Kael extinguished part of the fire.
"Stay behind me."
"I'm not hiding."
Another growl.
Closer this time.
Heavy footsteps circled the cabin.
Something scratched against the wooden walls.
Lyla gripped her sword.
Kael shifted slightly, his wolf close to the surface.
The front door burst open.
A massive gray wolf charged inside.
Kael met it head-on.
The two wolves crashed into the floor.
Wood splintered beneath them.
Lyla recognized the attacker.
"The Shadow Fang!"
More wolves entered through the broken doorway.
Lyla fought fiercely, slashing at one attacker while dodging another.
The cabin became a battlefield.
One masked warrior lunged toward her with a silver dagger.
Before the blade could reach her—
Kael threw himself between them.
The dagger sliced across his side.
Blood splashed across the floor.
"Kael!"
He ignored the pain.
With a powerful roar, he shifted fully into his enormous black wolf.
His golden eyes glowed fiercely.
The attackers hesitated.
Then a commanding voice echoed from outside.
"Retreat!"
The Shadow Fang warriors disappeared into the forest as quickly as they had arrived.
Silence returned.
Broken only by the sound of rain.
Kael shifted back into human form.
He staggered.
Blood soaked his shirt.
Lyla rushed forward instinctively.
"You've lost too much blood."
"I'll live."
"You need treatment."
"I'm fine."
"You are not fine."
Without waiting for permission, she helped him sit beside the fire.
She tore a strip from the bottom of her cloak.
Kael watched her.
"What are you doing?"
"Saving your life."
She carefully cleaned the wound before wrapping it tightly.
He winced.
"You've done this before."
"My mother taught me."
A shadow crossed her face.
"I was only ten when she died."
Kael looked at her gently.
"I'm sorry."
She tied the bandage.
"So am I."
For the first time since they met...
Neither saw an enemy.
Only another person carrying old wounds.
Far away...
Deep beneath an abandoned fortress...
The leader of the Shadow Fang Pack stood before a large stone altar.
His crimson eyes glowed in the darkness.
A hooded woman approached.
"They escaped."
"I know."
"The Alpha protected the girl."
The leader smiled.
"Exactly as the prophecy foretold."
The woman looked confused.
"Should we attack again?"
"No."
He looked toward the full moon shining through a crack in the ceiling.
"The Moon Goddess has already chosen."
"The bond has begun."
He placed his hand on an ancient scroll.
"When the daughter of Silver Claw carries the child of Black Moon..."
His smile widened.
"...the old kingdoms will either unite..."
The torches flickered violently.
"...or burn."
Lightning flashed across the night sky.
Unaware of the prophecy surrounding them, Lyla sat beside the injured Alpha, wondering if everything she had ever believed was built on lies.
Outside, the storm slowly began to fade.
But a far greater storm had only just begun.
