Chapter Two: Trapped with the Enemy

837 Words
The first arrow struck a tree only inches from Lyla's head. Splinters exploded into the air. Instinct took over. She ducked, drawing her sword as another volley of arrows rained down on the clearing. "Take cover!" Alpha Rowan shouted. The peace summit dissolved into chaos. Warriors from both packs rushed into defensive positions, each believing the other had betrayed the agreement. Lyla's heart pounded as she searched the battlefield. "Father!" Before she could reach him, another arrow flew toward her. A strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her behind a massive boulder. The arrow embedded itself in the rock with a sharp crack. She looked up in anger. Kael. She immediately shoved him away. "I don't need your help!" Kael's golden eyes remained fixed on the tree line. "This isn't the time to argue." "I'm not your responsibility." "No," he replied calmly. "But if you die, both our packs will blame each other. That means war." Before Lyla could answer, a loud howl echoed through the valley. It wasn't from a wolf. It was something darker. Something that sent chills through every werewolf present. Kael's expression hardened. "They're here." Lyla frowned. "Who?" "The Shadow Fang." --- From the forest emerged warriors dressed in black leather armor. Their faces were hidden beneath dark masks. Unlike ordinary werewolves, their eyes glowed an unnatural crimson. Without hesitation, they attacked both packs. One of the masked warriors lunged toward Kael. Kael shifted with astonishing speed. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. Dark fur burst from his skin. Within seconds, a massive black wolf stood where the Alpha had been. His golden eyes burned with authority. Lyla had heard stories about Kael's wolf. None of them had prepared her for the terrifying creature before her. The Black Alpha charged. His enormous body slammed into the attacker, sending him crashing into a tree. Another enemy rushed toward Lyla. She blocked the attack with her sword, twisting gracefully before striking the warrior's shoulder. The man stumbled backward. Before he could recover, Mira appeared beside Lyla. "You alright?" Lyla nodded. "For now." More enemies poured from the forest. "There are too many!" Mira shouted. --- Across the battlefield, Alpha Rowan fought beside Darius, Kael's Beta. Neither man trusted the other. Yet both understood that survival came first. "This isn't your doing," Rowan growled. Darius cut down another attacker. "I could say the same to you." Their eyes met briefly. For the first time, doubt crept into both Alphas' allies. Perhaps neither pack had planned this ambush. Perhaps someone else wanted them to fight. --- Kael shifted back into human form behind a cluster of rocks. His clothes were torn, and blood trickled from a cut above his eyebrow. He scanned the battlefield. Then his eyes widened. "Lyla!" She turned just as three Shadow Fang warriors surrounded her. She fought bravely, but they were closing in. One knocked her sword from her hand. Another raised a silver blade. Without thinking, Kael sprinted toward her. He tackled the attacker moments before the blade could strike. The two men rolled across the ground. Kael landed a powerful punch before throwing the warrior aside. He grabbed Lyla's hand. "Run!" "I can fight!" "You can fight later!" More enemies charged toward them. Kael pulled her into the forest. Reluctantly, she followed. --- Behind them, the sounds of battle slowly faded. They ran through dense woodland until neither could hear the clash of swords. Finally, Kael stopped. Both were breathing heavily. Lyla immediately pulled her hand away. "I don't trust you." "I know." "You expect me to believe you're innocent?" Kael sighed. "I don't expect anything." He looked toward the distant smoke rising above the valley. "I only know someone wanted us dead." Lyla folded her arms. "Convenient." "You still think I planned this?" "I don't know what to think anymore." For a long moment, neither spoke. Then thunder rumbled overhead. Dark clouds gathered. Within seconds, rain began pouring through the trees. Kael looked around. "We need shelter." "I'm not staying with you." "You'd rather spend the night with the Shadow Fang?" She hesitated. He had a point. Still, every instinct warned her not to trust him. Kael spotted an abandoned hunter's cabin deeper in the forest. "It'll keep us dry." Lyla reluctantly followed. --- The cabin was old but sturdy. Kael pushed open the wooden door. Dust filled the air. Inside was a small fireplace, two broken chairs, and a single bed covered with old blankets. Lyla remained near the doorway. "This changes nothing." Kael knelt beside the fireplace and lit a small fire. "I never said it did." Silence settled between them. Rain hammered against the roof. For the first time since childhood, Lyla found herself alone with the man she had hated for years. Neither of them knew that this storm would keep them trapped together. And before it ended, secrets buried for nearly two decades would begin to surface—secrets powerful enough to change everything Lyla believed about her family, Kael, and the war between their packs.
