“Oh, thanks, Rose!” I hugged her enthusiastically. “I think you’ll like him, I really do. He’s not one who stands on ceremony. And he’s been bruised…” “Yes, but haven’t we all?” she kindly remarked. Yes, hadn’t we all been bruised by life. Except for Rose. I never knew her to complain about her life. But that’s discounting the loss of her husband. While she never showed her grief, I had to assume that it affected her deeply, just as my dad’s state of disrepair affected Lavinia, even though she never showed it either. I decided that women must get brownie points in heaven for sucking so much in, having to be so damn strong. “And are you going to be staying here too, Priss?” Rose asked. “Some nights. If that’s okay.” “I have no quarrel with two people sleeping together, or having sex.”
