The Night After Hope
Bella lay in bed, staring at the faint patterns of moonlight seeping through her window. The laughter she had shared with James still echoed in her ears, warm and sweet. Her lips curved into a small smile as she remembered the way he had danced like a fool in the park, uncaring who watched.
But then, as silence deepened, another image crept in Eric’s smile. That dangerous, intoxicating smile that had once made her knees weak.
Her chest tightened.
She closed her eyes, willing it away. Why am I still thinking about him? Why does he still live in my head when I know what he did?
But memories weren’t polite guests. They barged in, uninvited.
The Ghost of His Touch
Her mind betrayed her, replaying nights when Eric had whispered into her ear, his arms pulling her close as though she was the only girl in the world. She remembered the way his cologne lingered on her clothes, the thrill of his voice calling her “baby.”
And she hated herself for missing it.
He hurt you, she reminded herself. He lied. He shattered you.
Yet her body still remembered the warmth, the closeness. Love, once tasted, was not so easily forgotten, even when poisoned.
She curled into herself, tears pricking her eyes. “Why can’t I just let you go?” she whispered into the darkness.
Conversations with Peace
The next morning, Bella sat at the cafeteria table, absentmindedly stirring her tea. Peace noticed immediately.
“You’ve got that faraway look again,” Peace said, sliding into the seat opposite her. “Spill it, Bella. What’s on your mind?”
Bella hesitated, then sighed. “It’s Eric. I keep… thinking about him. Even after yesterday. Even after James.”
Peace’s brows furrowed. “You’re still holding on to that jerk? Bella, come on. After everything?”
“I know,” Bella said quickly, ashamed. “I hate myself for it. I know what he did. I know how he broke me. But sometimes… I still miss him.”
Peace leaned back, arms crossed, her gaze softening. “That’s normal. Love isn’t a switch you just turn off. But missing him doesn’t mean you need him. It just means you’re human.”
Bella looked down. “Then why does it feel like part of me is still his?”
“Because you gave him too much of yourself,” Peace replied gently. “But listen, you can take it back. Piece by piece. Starting with not lying to yourself about what he really was.”
Bella swallowed hard, her throat tight.
Shadows in Daylight
Throughout the week, Bella found herself drifting between two worlds.
In the classroom, James would wave at her, his smile grounding her in the present. During their walks, his laughter made her feel safe.
But the moment she was alone, Eric’s voice came back. The promises. The lies wrapped in honey. The nights when she believed she was his only one.
She hated that her heart still reacted to his ghost, like a wound that hadn’t healed properly.
The Diary
One evening, Bella pulled out her old diary from the bottom of her drawer. It was filled with pages from the height of her relationship with Eric.
“He told me I’m the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen.”
“He said he’d never hurt me. I believe him.”
“Maybe I’ve finally found my forever.”
Bella’s hands trembled as she read the words. She could almost feel her younger self clinging to illusions, desperate to be loved.
Tears blurred her vision.
She grabbed a pen and, with shaking hands, wrote over the entries in bold strokes:
“LIES.”
“BROKEN PROMISES.”
“NOT LOVE.”
Her tears fell on the page, smudging the ink.
James’s Patience
The following weekend, James invited her to the library to study together. He noticed her distracted glances, the way she chewed on her lip as if fighting unseen battles.
At one point, he gently touched her hand. “Bella… are you okay?”
She looked at him, her chest aching with guilt. He was so kind. So steady. Yet her heart was still tangled in Eric’s shadow.
“I’m trying,” she whispered. “Some days I feel free, like I can move on. Other days… it’s like he’s still here.”
James nodded slowly, his gaze thoughtful. “Healing isn’t a straight line. It’s messy. But don’t punish yourself for the shadows. They’ll fade with time.”
His words soothed her, but the ache lingered.
Dreams of Yesterday
That night, Bella dreamt of Eric.
In the dream, he was smiling, reaching for her hand. “I miss you,” he whispered. And her heart leapt before she remembered. Before the lies. Before the betrayal.
She woke up sweating, her chest heaving, anger and longing battling inside her.
She wanted to scream. To tear him out of her mind. To erase him completely.
But instead, she cried quietly into her pillow until dawn.
The Lingering Shadow
Days passed, and Bella continued to live in the in-between. With James, she felt hope. Alone, she felt haunted.
And though she hated herself for it, she realized something painful but true:
Letting go wasn’t a single choice. It was a daily battle.
And Eric’s shadow still lingered, clinging to her heart like smoke after a fire.
