Chapter 2.
EMBERS POV.
“Where am I” were the first words that escaped my lips as I took a look around the strange room I found myself in. My heart began to pound rapidly at the thought of me being captured eventually.
Were they seriously going to kill me for a crime I didn’t commit?
I tried to stand but I was too weak to move. I looked to my side to see a substance being drained into my system,
“Am I being drug?” I questioned.
The sound of chatter from behind the door prompted me to drop onto the bed,
“… and so alpha, what do you intend to do with her, she shouldn’t be here,” the strange voice said. The presence of someone else in the room made me wary about what was going on in my chest, it was too irresistible to ignore prompting me to clench my chest from pain.
“What is this?” I questioned,
“Check up on her,” the man who spoke earlier instructed someone who looked like a doctor to move towards me, and that was when I locked eyes with him. The figure. He was the last thing I saw before I passed out and he was the strange man who always appeared in my dreams. What was he doing here?
“She’s fine….what about her health? Is everything okay with her,” he asked with darkness laced in his tone. He smelt like trouble, I didn’t know if I was safe or if I had just run into my enemy's trap,
“I want to leave,” I said,
“Leave? What do you….” he started before the man who spoke tirelessly earlier interjected,
“Alpha, if she wants to leave she should, I don’t see any reason why she should stay here, she doesn’t belong here…” he started,
“My lord…”Another figure appeared beside the frame of the door,
“The Elders have heard the news of the passing and they are here to see you…” He said bowing at him,
“Alpha I suggest you let her leave,” the man added,
“Alpha… that means…” I let out as I placed the only thought of how my parents warned me against wolves. I had gotten to a stage where I could boldly say that I have learnt the repercussions of playing with wolves.
“You’re werewolves?” I let out turning the room grave silent.
“We should go see the elders, you tell the maids to prepare clothes and a room for her immediately…” he started turning in the direction of the door,
“But alpha….” He started before being cut off sharply,
“My decision is final Cornelio,” the alpha fired at him with a hint of rage laced in his tone, before finally exiting the room.
“What’s going on? I need to leave, I shouldn’t be around wolves… It’s forbidden,” I tried to fight but they paid no attention to me.
“Don't you think I think so too, but right now it’s either you die or the Alpha kills me, and I’m not taking chances,” he said.
After a few minutes, we arrived at a huge room, that basically looked twice the size of my house or should I say old house. The thought of what the current state of my house would look like frightened me. I didn’t want to think about the horror that would have happened if I hadn’t made it out of town quickly. I had been running for the last three days hoping to get my freedom, but here I am stuck in the den of my worst nightmares. My parents dreaded wolves but here I was surrounded by them.
“A few maids will be sent to you soon but for now stay put while I try to convince the alpha to get rid of you, we already have enough trouble on our plate,” he said to me almost like a threat before he disappeared out of the room alongside the company he brought with him.
I sat in silence as I let my thoughts run loose in my head till everything went silent again.
The beaming lights from the room alerted my brain that I had finally woken up. Still in panic of the sudden change occurring in my life, it took me a while to remember I wasn’t home. I had been captured.
“You’re awake,” the familiar voice echoed coldly in my ear as I slowly averted my attention towards the figure. Tall, masculine, long shiny brunette hair neatly packed into a low bun, helping him demarcate his facial hair from his actual hair. His teal-green eyes made their way towards me,
“Why am I still here? Why have you refused to let me go?” I let out,
“I can’t let you go. You belong here…with me,” he said taking my hand in his,
“What do you mean by I belong here. You are the alpha right? You know the rule. Humans and wolves aren’t supposed to cross boundaries or else they’ll be penalized,” I said,
“But you were found in wolf territory but I have decided to pardon you by giving you shelter sensing that you must have been in trouble, yet this is how ungrateful you are? Humans aren’t really different from what we hear,” he said letting out the last part, slowly moving his head at me,
“What were you running from? Are you a criminal?” He asked but before I could speak he had already answered his own question,
“No you can’t be, you look too innocent to be, well it’s mostly the innocent-looking ones that commit the worst of the crimes…” he started before I cut him off,
“I didn’t commit a crime, my parents got involved with the wrong people…. And I lost them, all I heard was run out through the window as the angry mob approached our front door… the next thing I saw was an inferno slowly bringing our home to the ground, with an angry mob still in search of any survivor. All I could do was run and never look back,” I said to him,
“You went through all of these? But what could your parents have gotten into that would warrant such brutality?” He asked, staring deep into my eyes as if the answer lay there,
“I have no idea, my parents told me about a house, that has all the answers to my questions but that’s all I know, I have no other clue about what’s going on,” I said. He looked lost for words as he tried to process all I was saying.
“We appear to be in the same situation,” he said. His eyes had begun to glister like tears were making a way to escape,
“I lost my father a few hours ago, and I can’t figure out what part makes me angrier. If it’s the fact that the fight we had triggered his death or it’s the news he dropped last minute,” he said staring lost in space,
“I don’t understand,” I let out genuinely trying to figure out what he was trying to say,
“You don’t need to, I just wanted to let you know that you can stay here… I will protect you from now on,” he said, more like a command.
“You can’t keep me here, I need to avenge my parents' death,” I defended,
“I never said you shouldn’t, I’m just saying you belong to me now. No one can hurt you, or lay a finger on you, ever.” He said, cold, stern, I could already taste the blood of whoever wanted to mess with me. Now the words of the man earlier made more sense to me.
“I’m not an object that can be owned or bought, you saved me, fine; but I need to leave. I don’t belong here…” I started before he cut in,
“Neither do you belong there. Look, there’s a lot going on right now, no one should see you or know you’re human if not there’s a lot at stake, I will send Cornelio to you as soon as he is back from the errand he embarked on. He would watch and assist you with whatever you need,” he said getting to his feet,
“I’m sorry,” I let out,
He turned to me with a straight face as he curved a brow questioning my choice of words,
“About your father, I wish I could tell mine goodbye one last time, you must be going through hell,” I said. But all he did was stare straight into my eyes with no emotion in sight,
“Yes…. I will see you later….” He said finally turning to walk out of the room before I had another chance to say a word.
