Everything was white and cold, I guess that's something that never changed. Hospitals are always white, cold, and with an awful smell of disinfectant mixed with blood. I’ve been into many of these places in my lifetime be it mine is a bit longer than others but still for being immortal you’d expect my hospital visits would be nonexistent but Melony wasn’t so lucky she's only 3, I thought this time would be different that melony would be human or at least I hoped she would, that she’d be able to experience every stage of life as it’s meant to be.
“How bad is it this time?” asked Alex, squeezing my shoulder as if to reassure me that everything would be alright but his face couldn’t hide his worry. My dad was my best friend even when Jake left he never left my side, comforted me through my grief and anger, took me to eat ice cream, and skipped school just to play baseball in the rain.
“I don’t know dad, she’s been in and out of it for the last couple of days. I really thought this time would be different. She's supposed to be more human if anything her human blood shouldn’t be resisting ours she’s supposed to be mortal, she isn’t even a true hybrid so why is she so weak...?”
“You should go rest, your mother and I will stay and look after her” I know he was worried not just about Melony but I haven’t been able to leave her side since she relapsed, just a couple of months ago we spent the weekend at the beach taking in the sun and building sandcastles to our heart's content.
“Thanks but I’m…”
“No you're not fine, you haven’t fed for weeks and you’ve barely eaten human food. Your grandfather has been monitoring her and nobody knows medicine like him he’s been in the field for centuries literally”
“Okay, but I’ll but I’ll just shower and have a quick hunt” Alex gave me a reassuring hug and peak on the forehead, I knew he was right I needed a bath and was growing weak.
Just as I was heading out of the hospital I heard a voice call out to me… “Hey Lil, where are you going, did you leave Melony alone?”
“Of course not, Alex is looking after her while I go shower and grab a quick bite. I haven't left her side since she’s been here unlike her father” I see Max finch at my words but I wasn’t in the mood to play nice I was tired and it was true. I know he has to take care of business but still, he could be here more after all Melony isn’t just my child and If it was Jake he’d put everything aside because family is always a priority or at least it was.
“You know I can’t leave the office for too long, but I came as soon as I had everything sorted out and I’m thinking of asking my secretary to move most of my work so I can work and care for Mel”
“I’m sorry, I know you care, it's just frustrating seeing her like this. She so ...” Max pulls me into an embrace whispering into my ear that everything would be alright and that Melanie is a strong girl. She truly is.
Max and I met in highschool, or at least during my fifth round of highschool I was the new girl, I always tend to keep a low profile but Max never knew what that meant. At first I was reluctant he was high profile, everyone knew him and his family plus he was human so being an unaging bloodthirsty being it wasn’t a good mix, not saying impossible my parents meet when my mom was still humans she had me before being turned and it almost killed her but my dad was able to turn her just in time so I’m what you call a half breed part human part vampire. Max truly won me over, he was persistent and he made me laugh, something that hadn’t happened for many years.
