HER - Chapter 7: You Can't Catch Me (1 of 2)

2611 Words
I drew the line between me and Jun from the start, but he keeps on crossing that line whenever he has a chance so I always have to push him back and draw the line again. I meant every word I told him but I didn’t expect that it’ll hurt me too, especially his response that made me feel sorrier for him. I can’t love him but I can’t lose him as a friend too as I’m already used to being with him when Ryan don’t have much time for me anymore. I know I’m being selfish for keeping him by my side even though I’m well aware of what he feels for me. He’s a great guy and I probably fall in love with him if only he came to my life before I committed the sin that ruined myself. “Nurse Hera!” Hailee calling mt attention. “Did you hear me? You’re spacing out. What happened to you this afternoon??” “Nothing much.” wiping her clean with a towel as she can’t move freely on her own after her chemotherapy. “You’re lying, there’s something bothering you. Did you have a fight with Jun again??” she said with a hoarse voice. “You should break up with him if he always makes you feel down, you’re beautiful, there’s a lot of men out there and he’s not the only one.” “Him and I are just friends, and friends don’t have breakups. Also, even if there’s a lot of men out there, I don’t need one.” I replied. “You like him too, why don’t you just admit it to yourself? You can’t deny the fact that you’re getting affected by him so don’t tell me that you don’t have any feelings towards him.” smiling at me. “Of course, I do have feelings for him, he’s my friend, and I do care about him.” I responded. “If you’re in bad terms with one of your friends do you feel better about it?” “No, I feel down whenever that happens, which happened to me most of the time because of my temper.” she answered. “Exactly, liking someone as a friend and loving somebody are different, with experience you can tell them apart. Falling in love is easy but breaking up is hard to do, so you must use your head too and not just your heart, because if you always listen to what your heart says, you’ll just end up doing crazy things and most of them might haunt you for the rest of your life.” I explained. “You sounded like a woman who has been divorced 7 times. How many heart aching moments do you have in life to be like what you are now?” “Too many to mention.” smiling at her. “Where did you get that kind of expression that I’ve been divorced 7 times? I never been married before and I never will in the future.” “Yeah, don’t marry anyone, just date My dad and mom got divorced, I initially wanted to be with my dad because he’s the best and my mom’s the worst, but my mom said I’m her property and not dad’s because she carried me in her belly for 9 months, so I’m hers.” chuckles. “Is that the reason you’ve been rebelling against your mother that you rather be ill than get treated, ruining your life when you only just started high school??” looking at her in the eyes. “Rebelling is that what you adults called it??” she said sarcastically. “Then what do teenagers called it if not rebelling??” chuckles. “Defying?? Were you a perfect daughter to your parents that you always follow their will and not yours??” giving me a look. “It’s the same as rebelling. I’m not even a good daughter so it’s impossible for me to be a perfect one.” done cleaning her up. “Done.” “Wait, Nurse Hera.” stopping me to leave. “Does Dr. Haggerty reply to my letter? I prefer if he write me a letter too, but maybe he’s too busy and he just told you his answer to relay it to me??” “What letter??” dazed with her questions. “He didn’t tell me anything but he’s been asking about you recently. Why what’s between you and him??” thinking deeply. “I asked him out.” she replied blatantly. “Excuse me, what??!” shocked by her revelation. “You asked Dr. Haggerty out?? Why? How? When did it happened??” “When I first saw him, I like him, because he reminded me of my dad.” “Oh, alright.” understanding her situation. “I’ll ask Dr. Haggerty then about his answer to your letter.” walking out from her room. She just sees Dr. Haggerty as a father figure so as her friend and nurse, I’ve discussed the matter with Dr. Kim and apparently, he already knows about the letter as Dr. Haggerty already consulted him. “So, that’s what it’s all about.” Dr. Kim drinking tea with me in his office. “That girl doesn’t want to talk to me because she doesn’t like my accent.” looking at me. “Is my English that poor??” speaking in English. “She’s making me get a perfect Californian accent.” Smiling at him. “She told me that you look like her stepfather so she’s a bit indifferent towards you but she’s a nice girl.” “Naughty or nice, she’s still my patient so I’ve got to get along with her.” glancing at me. “By the way Nurse Nevaeh, you’re not dating Young Master Oh, right?” “All of a sudden?” startled by his change of topic. “Him and I are just close friends, I’m only committed to my career and nothing else.” “You made me smile when you told me you’re just close friends with him but you take away that smile immediately.” he uttered. “You’re gonna find someone better, there’s a lot of pretty girls out there not just me.” stand up. “By the way, the tea is bitter.” “It’s expensive that’s why I prepared it for you, but honestly, I don’t like the taste too.” showing his true reaction after sipping his tea. “Adding milk will make it taste better.” smiling at him as I leave his office. “Oh my gosh! Nurse Ji!” shocked by her sudden appearance in front of me. “Do you have something to tell me??” stepping back from her as she keeps on stepping forward to me. “Dr. Kim is the most handsome doctor in this hospital, you already have Young Master Oh, are you going to take him away from us too??” Nurse Ji cornered me at the wall in the hallway. “No, he’s all yours, even Young Master Oh, I’m not taking anyone. I’m not an enemy alright?” pushing her away from me gently. “I’m only here for work and nothing else, also I prefer to be surrounded by children in the ward than men, you know how I love children, right??” smiling. “Haist, if only I’m a goddess as you, I won’t be this insecure about myself.” her face started to light up from being intimidating. “You are beautiful Nurse Ji, you of all people should love yourself first before others love you.” my hands on her shoulders. “Tch, easy for you to say because you are born beautiful, even if you’re wearing big round glasses with that small but lovely eyes of yours.” “See, you’re luckier than me because you have big round eyes and perfect sense of sight.” looking at her in the eyes. “Do you have any more flaws that can make me feel better aside from being short-sighted??” she starts smiling a bit at me as we walk along. “You’re taller and curvy than me. You’re pretty sexy actually.” praising her height and the figure of her body. “Now that you mention it, you’re very small.” looking at me from head to toe. “But very attractive, I hate you.” “I hate you too.” giggling with her. We’re only 4 nurses at the pediatric ward, Nurse Ji, was the 1st one who approached me when I got transferred. She’s peculiar but she’s the real one among the 3, because the 2 might be smiling at me all the time but they’re both fake. “Nurse Nevaeh, you have a package.” Nurse Woo handed me a box as soon as I arrived with Nurse Ji at the station. “Who would send a package this late night??” Nurse Gin moving to my side as I open the envelope to see who’s the sender. It’s a blank paper again, and even if I haven’t opened the box the yet, I already know what’s inside. “Do you girls want it?” handing to Nurse Gin the box. “I’m going to check on the children in their rooms.” “Wow! Amazing!” Nurse Gin exclaimed as she opens the box. “Does your suitor last April who’s sending you box of desserts weekly left and just come back this month??” “These are all high-class quality desserts, are you sure you’re just giving these to us?” Nurse Woo eating one of the cakes. “They’re all yours.” walking off from the station to check up on the children. “It’s so annoying that he had to remind me that I forgot mama’s birthday.” talking to myself as I walk at the hallway. A few hours later and its already Sunday morning, I saw Nurse Woo talking to Jun as I walk towards them and she’s probably telling him about the package last night along with malicious comments. Jun was staring at me as I make my way to him so Nurse Woo look at the same way where he’s staring at. The moment she saw me, she said something again to Jun and smirked at me before she took her leave. “Let’s go.” Jun said coldly at me as he walks off first towards the car. I know that he gave me a piece of his mind yesterday and he’s been aloof towards me since then but he’s more snobbish today. He usually greets me good morning with smile on his face but not today. “Morning. Have you eaten breakfast yet?” breaking the silence between us even if it’s awkward to talk first. “Do you really care if I ate or not?” getting in at the driver’s seat. “Hah, fine.” hopping in at the passenger’s seat. “I’m famished, can we stop over at the store on the 5th street?” putting on my seatbelt. “I heard that your dessert guy delivered sweets to you last night, aren’t you supposed to be full until now?” stepping on the gas. “Heh? What did Nurse Woo tell you earlier?” glancing at him. “Was it a lie, that you received high-class desserts last night?” he said. “Do I have to explain myself to you?” staring ahead instead of him. “Yeah right, you don’t have to.” sneers. “I’m just your friend anyway.” “Well obviously, you woke up at the wrong side of the bed, so I’m not doing this with you, I’ll just keep quiet here.” covering my mouth with the back of my hand as I look at view outside. He pulled over at the 5th street as he remembered what I told him that I almost forgot because of my annoyance. “I’m dining in, Ryan doesn’t like strong smell of food in his car, also I might have indigestion if I eat here.” getting off from the car. I went inside the diner and he followed me after I took a seat at the corner chair, ordering the same meal that I said to the old lady. “Here’s your sausage meal.” old lady glancing at me and Jun as she put our orders down to the table. “Early in the morning you two are fighting.” shaking her head as she leaves. Jun was glaring at me as he took his seat across me and I tried my best to ignore him because I don’t want to argue with him. “That’s mayonnaise, the other one is the hot sauce.” taking the mayonnaise after he put it back on the center table. “Uhm, excuse me.” a man approached me. “Our table run out of mayonnaise; can you share that to us?” “Here you go.” handing him the mayonnaise after I put some on my sausage. “Do you need anything else?” noticed that he’s still standing and looking at me even if he already has the mayonnaise. “I don’t usually ask someone’s name but …” talking to me shyly. “Then don’t ask her name.” Jun cut him off as he glares at him. “Don’t do things that you don’t usually do, death comes next after that.” The man returned to his seat and looked back at our table before he talks with his friends who also turn their heads to us. Even I was stunned at the words that came from his mouth as I never expect him to be that savage to anyone. It was uncomfortable to dine with him but I managed to clean my plate because of my hunger. He paid for our bill before he walked off first outside the diner and even asked the old lady to give me a tonic for indigestion. He drank the same tonic too which means he’s also uncomfortable dining with me when he’s obviously in bad mood.    ... To be continued ...
