Chapter 13

Marcus Sterling's perp walk through the lobby of Harrington Enterprises marked the end of an era – just not the one he had envisioned. Camera flashes exploded like lightning as federal agents escorted the former interim CEO through the same doors where, just months earlier, he had orchestrated Jordan's arrest. Liam watched from the mezzanine, his hand intertwined with Jordan's, as Sterling's carefully crafted façade finally crumbled. Gone was the impeccable three-piece suit, replaced by rumpled business attire and a distinctly disheveled appearance after a night in federal custody. The man's silver hair, usually perfectly coiffed, stuck out at odd angles, and his trademark smugness had given way to something far more primal – fear. "Look at me!" Sterling suddenly shouted, his head snapping up toward where Jordan stood. "You think this is over? I still have friends in high places. I'll be out by dinner!" Jordan's fingers tightened around Liam's, but her voice remained steady as she addressed her former board chairman. "The only dinner you'll be having, Marcus, is prison food. Federal prosecutors tend to take a dim view of corporate conspiracies and false imprisonment." Sterling lunged forward, causing several reporters to jump back, but the federal agents held him firmly. "You self-righteous b***h! You and your bleeding heart policies were driving this company into the ground. Someone had to step in, had to make the hard choices!" "The only choice you made," Jordan replied, her voice carrying clearly through the now-silent lobby, "was to betray everything this company stands for. And for what? A few quarters of inflated profits? The chance to play CEO?" "You never understood," Sterling spat. "Business isn't about making the world better. It's about winning. Power. Control. You were too weak to do what needed to be done!" Liam stepped forward, unable to contain himself any longer. "She wasn't weak, Sterling. She was strong enough to build something that mattered – something more than just profits and power. And now everyone knows exactly what kind of man you really are." Sterling's eyes narrowed as they fixed on Liam. "You. The lovesick little PR boy. I should have fired you the moment I took over. Should have known you'd be trouble." "You made a lot of mistakes, Marcus," Jordan said coldly. "Underestimating Liam was just one of many. Now, I believe these agents have a nice cell waiting for you." As Sterling was led away, still hurling threats and invective, Olivia appeared at Jordan's other side. "The forensic accountants have finished their preliminary review. The evidence against him is overwhelming. They've already frozen his assets, including the offshore accounts where he was funneling company money." Jordan nodded, her professional mask firmly in place despite the emotion Liam could feel thrumming through her hand in his. "What's the damage assessment?" "Bad, but not irreparable," Olivia replied, consulting her tablet. "Sterling's 'restructuring' did some serious harm to our long-term sustainability initiatives, but most of the infrastructure is still in place. We can rebuild." "And the employees he terminated?" "Already being contacted with offers to return," Olivia smiled. "Though some may need extra convincing after everything that's happened." "Make it happen," Jordan said firmly. "Whatever it takes. These people lost their jobs because of one man's greed. We owe them more than just their positions back." Liam felt his heart swell with pride. This was the Jordan Harrington he had fallen in love with – the leader who saw her company as more than just a vehicle for profit, who understood that true success meant lifting everyone up, not just those at the top. Later that afternoon, they sat in Jordan's office – her real office, not the sterile space Sterling had transformed it into – watching news coverage of Sterling's arraignment. The charges were damning: corporate fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy, false imprisonment, obstruction of justice. The prosecutor was asking for no bail, citing Sterling's substantial resources and flight risk. "Twenty-five years," Jordan said softly, watching as Sterling was led away from the courthouse in handcuffs. "That's what the prosecutor thinks he'll get, minimum. Possibly more once they finish tracking all the money he stole." Liam moved behind her chair, his hands gently massaging her shoulders. "He deserves every day of it. He nearly destroyed everything you built, Jordan. He tried to steal your life." "No," Jordan said, reaching up to catch one of his hands. "He tried to steal the company. You showed me that my life is more than just this office, these walls." She turned to face him, her eyes soft with emotion. "When I was sitting in that cell, thinking I'd lost everything, you proved that what matters most can't be taken away." Liam leaned down, pressing his forehead to hers. "I told you I believed in you. That wasn't just words." "I know," she whispered. "You proved it by risking everything to uncover the truth. By fighting for me when everyone else walked away." She paused, a slight smile curving her lips. "Though I have to admit, I never expected my knight in shining armor to be armed with forensic accounting skills." "Speaking of which," Liam straightened up, his expression turning serious. "We need to talk about the PR strategy for handling all of this. The media's going to want the whole story – Sterling's betrayal, your exoneration, the company's future..." He hesitated. "And us." Jordan raised an eyebrow. "Having second thoughts about dating the boss?" "Never," Liam said firmly. "But we need to be smart about how we handle this. The last thing you need right now is accusations of impropriety." "Always the PR professional," Jordan smiled, rising from her chair to face him. "What do you suggest, Director of Corporate Communications?" "Full transparency," Liam said without hesitation. "We control the narrative by telling the truth. Yes, we fell in love. Yes, it happened while you were CEO. But nothing happened until after Sterling's conspiracy came to light. We emphasize that our relationship grew out of mutual respect and shared values, not power dynamics." "And the board?" "Already handled," Liam grinned. "Olivia presented them with a comprehensive ethics review and conflict of interest management plan this morning. As long as I recuse myself from any decisions directly affecting your public image or compensation, we're in the clear." Jordan shook her head in amazement. "You really do think of everything, don't you?" "It's my job to protect you," Liam said softly. "Both professionally and personally. And I take that responsibility very seriously." Jordan stepped closer, her hands coming to rest on his chest. "And what about your responsibility to kiss me right now?" "Well," Liam murmured, drawing her closer, "I take that responsibility very seriously too." As their lips met, the television continued to show footage of Sterling being led away to begin his long journey through the justice system. But neither Jordan nor Liam noticed, too lost in each other and the promise of their future together – a future built on truth, justice, and the kind of love that could withstand any conspiracy. Sterling had tried to destroy them both, but in the end, he had only made them stronger. And as Jordan's arms tightened around Liam's neck, deepening their kiss, they both knew that the best revenge wasn't watching their enemy fall – it was rising together, stronger and more united than ever. The empire Sterling had tried to steal would not only survive but thrive, guided by the woman who had built it and the man who had helped her reclaim it. And their love story would become legend in the corporate world – proof that sometimes, justice and romance could go hand in hand.
