Lyra and Kael, exhausted and on the run, found a temporary refuge in a, abandoned house on the outskirts of the city. The air was thick with the scent of dust and fear.
"They'll be looking for us," Lyra said, her voice a low murmur as she peered out a grimy window. "Elias must have found out we're on to him."
Kael leaned against the wall, the heavy tome still clutched in his hand. "He'll send his best. I know his methods. He'll frame us as traitors, as a mixed-blood abomination that conspired to destabilize our society."
Suddenly, a silver light pulsed in the palm of Lyra's hand. It was a communication sigil, a message from Anya. "It's my Elder," she said, her eyes widening with a mix of dread and relief. "She wants to meet. She said it's urgent."
Kael's jaw tightened. "It could be a trap. She knows you're with me. She could be working with him."
"I have to go," Lyra said, her voice firm. "She is my Elder. I have to find out what she knows."
They met in a secluded grove of ancient Lunaris trees, their branches twisted and dark against the moonlight.Anya , her face a mask of cold fury, emerged from the shadows.
"Lyra," she said, her voice sharp and unforgiving. "What is the meaning of this? You are consorting with a Solis enforcer. A child of light. You have betrayed our sacred laws."
"Elder, you don't understand," Lyra pleaded. "We have evidence. A Solis Elder is behind the kidnappings. He's using a ritual of transference to strip the children of their magic."
The Elder's face remained impassive. "I know. We have our own sources. A trusted informant in the Solis clan has been feeding us information for months. They told us about the ritual."
Lyra felt a flicker of hope. "Then you know we're on the same side. We can work together to expose him."
"No," the Elder said, her voice cold. "You cannot. This is a chance for us, Lyra. A chance to expose the Solis for the corrupt, power-hungry clan they are. We will use this information to turn their own people against them. We will have our revenge for centuries of oppression."
Lyra's hope turned to ash. "This isn't about revenge! It's about saving the children."
"The children are a tool," Anya said , a chilling calm in her voice. "A means to an end. Your informant is telling us the truth, Lyra, but not the whole truth. We will use this to turn the people against each other. It will be glorious."
Lyra was stunned into silence. Her own Elder, the woman she had trusted and revered, was using the children's suffering for a political power play. She was no better than the Solis Elder she was trying to expose.
Suddenly, a voice rang out from the shadows. "Lyra, get out of there!"
It was Kael, his golden aura a blaze of light in the darkness. He had followed her, unwilling to leave her alone. The Lunaris Elder's eyes narrowed, a flicker of something close to hatred in their depths.
"A Solis," she hissed, her magical aura rising, a shimmering wall of silver. "You brought him here. You have truly betrayed us."
A blast of pure Lunaris magic shot toward them. Kael pulled Lyra out of the way, the blast incinerating a tree behind them. They were out of time. The Elder had revealed her true colors, and now, they were being hunted by both sides.
