Chapter 5 “Look! Odessa your skin glows. Look!” I didn’t need to be told, I could see it myself. It was shinning like ember. My furs had come out but my wolf didn’t. It was… magical. “Lily! come see this, she is the one.” Lily came running into the house. She stopped immediately at the sight of all. The fact that she was startled was written all over her face. She ran to hug me, but as she let out her arms for an embrace, there was a reaction on my skin that pushed her, sent her flying across the room, crashing into book shelves. “No, Lily! You shouldn’t have done that.” “Lily!” I cried out running to her aid. “No, stay away from her!… for now. Maybe when the glow comes off. And the triggers are low.” Lily groaned in pain but still the startled look had not left her face. “I am happy for you.” Her startled look had broken into a smiling face. I was happy for myself too but wait… what happens now? I couldn’t hold my lips from asking. “What happens now?” “Lily will train you in the art of combat, wash away all that weakness written all over you. And I will show how to use your gift but don’t come in contact with Lily, until your skin stops flowing and you’re back to normal. Okay?” “Okay. Sorry Lily. But why? Why did that happen?” “Serve your questions for later Love.” ***** “C’mon you can do better than that.” I ran, this time faster, jumped up and directed a flying fist at her, but what happened, was not the expected. Swiftly, she sidestepped and I came crashing on the ground. “Ouch. Can’t you just give me normal fighting lessons?” “Oh Odessa, you learn to fight by fighting.” “Well, I’ll love to see you dodge the swinging claws of my wolf.” I shape shifted and as fast as I could, attacked her with hope of overpowering her. She dodged and with a little push I came falling on the floor, once again. “Pathetic and I didn’t even use my wolf. Now I’d like to see you fight this.” Lily shape shifted. Her wolf was so tall and huge, had the physique of a male wolf. I quickly dropped my human. Fear gripped me immediately. I couldn’t do this, no, I would be torn down. “Alright, alright. You win.” She dropped her wolf too. But the fight wasn’t over. “Again!” I ran towards her, targeting my right fist at her face. I knew she would dodge again, which she did, tilting sideways. Anticipating her move, I swiftly threw my left fist into her dodging position. Luckily for me, it caught her. She paused, moved her jaw a little bit. Obviously she was pained, I was delighted. “Good, you attack better. Now let’s see how you defend.” She drove her fist forward, but I dodged swiftly. With force, she kicked my legs together, sending me crashing down. I sprang up, rage kindling within me. Charging towards her, I lifted her off the ground, ready to slam her down, but she expertly maneuvered herself free. In an instant, I found myself on the ground, again. I thought about giving up soon: this wasn’t going right. But no, not yet. I stood up, yet again, but when I turned to face her, she was nowhere to be seen. I scanned my surroundings, . Suddenly, a hunch made me glance over my shoulder. That's when I saw her, charging towards me with inhuman speed. I quickly dropped to the ground, scrambling to defend myself, and squeezed my body into a tight ball. It was painfully clear: I was no match for her. For a moment nothing else happened. I slowly opened my eyes to see her standing over me. She stretched out her hands. “Get up dear. At least you’re better than I thought. You nearly gave a successful slam on the ground.” “Thank you.” Wasn’t grateful for the whooping though. I grabbed her hands and she pulled me up, but with so much force I nearly came falling down, again. “Not at all a nice way to treat the last descendant of the Lyrian pack.” “The ‘supposedly last descendant.’ There might be others like you out there, you never know.” “But how, how do I get to be the one to save my pack? Like who am I? I am not even a fighter. Arghhh. It’s all so annoying, cool but annoying at the same time, the responsibility. And how am I even really sure that the pack will have any trouble coming soon. I mean aside from the terrible oppression of foreigners, the pack is alright.” “Don’t ask how, ask why. You see, there are a lot of people in the world that want to be great, want to do great things. But then, none of us gets to choose our destiny. The universe chooses for us. The universe has chosen that you lead your pack when the time comes.” “But what if the time never comes.” There was a pause for a moment. “Let time to tell. But personally, I feel you were made for great things. And I know it’s hard for you to feel that way because of your background story but that’s what should make you stronger. I know you feel underdogs don’t always win but as I said: let time tell.” “Thanks. That has really boosted my spirit.” “You are welcome.” “Seems you know so much about me, why don’t you tell me more about yourself. I see you have magical powers. Obviously, you’re unique.” “No. Magic? No, no. I don’t have magic, the enchanter only thought me that spell so I could rescue you.” “Are you joking. You talk like learning a spell is that easy, I mean it literally takes gifted people to do it.” “Maybe you’re right but nah. I don’t like to see myself as a magician. Magic really done a lot to me personally. That’s why I don’t really like learning or practicing spells.” “Is it okay if I ask what exactly happened.?” “It’s okay. But you know we still have to train on your spirit caller today.” “I’d love to rest and listen to your story.” Lily stared at me intently. I knew she was looking for a certain response. And I didn’t hesitate to give her. “Okay, okay. I’ll train when you’re ready. But tell me your story first.” “My mother. She was a great sorcerers I knew and she wasn’t an evil person. But she struggled with explosive anger issues. Once my dad lied to her about his s*x affair with another woman. When she later got to find out, she came home, got into a heated argument with my father. She couldn’t keep in her anger. She casted a spell on him that sent him flying into a wall. He hit his head on a brick wall and when he fell, he couldn’t stand up again.” “Oh my. That’s really sad. I am so sorry.” She looked at me and smiled. “I haven’t even told you everything yet. When my mother saw that my father had died, she drank poison and killed herself.” I didn’t know what to say. It was all just sad. I tried to imagine what her years without parents were like. While I was still lost, the moment was broken up by the rustling of leaves from the bushes that surrounded us. Could the Alpha have located were we were in this woods? Who could that be? I looked at Lily, she looked at me too, fierceness in her eyes like she was ready for a fight. “Come out. Who is there?” Lily called out. No one came out but the rustling continued. “I said come out now!” Lily thundered again. “Hey, hey don’t hurt me. I am looking for my daughter. The enchanter sent me a message that she would be here. Her name is Odessa.”
