Chapter 4 Pete and John chatted about this and that as they drove toward The Riverside Diner. Pete was pretty sure they had bagels. At least they might could get something bready with some cream cheese. John hadn’t changed a bit, unless maybe he was more open about himself. They’d first met in grade school, and he’d been Pete’s best friend all the way through. He wasn’t anything like the people in Pete’s family or church. He’d grown an inch or two since school, and Pete found himself nearly eye to eye with him. Still had the same slender frame, though. Thin but tight, like a dancer. Same curly blond hair, as pretty as a picture. The only real changes were a jaunty slant to his nose and a ruby earring.
