Chapter Seven

Confronting Liana wasn’t going to be easy, but it had to be done. For the past few days, I couldn’t shake off the image of her kissing that guy, betraying Theo in the worst way possible. I kept telling myself that maybe Liana would come to her senses, that she’d see the pain she was causing and put an end to it. But I was done waiting. I spotted Liana near the library after class and decided it was time. My heart was pounding, and I hated that I was even in this position. I wasn’t sure what kind of response I’d get, but I had to try. "Liana, can we talk?" I called out, walking quickly toward her. She glanced up from her phone, her usual calm demeanor still firmly in place. "Sure, Delilah. What’s up?" I hesitated for a moment, unsure how to start. But there was no point in beating around the bush. "I know about you and that guy. I saw you two together… and I saw you kiss him." Liana blinked, her expression faltering for just a moment before her face hardened. "What are you talking about?" "Don’t play dumb. I saw you with him at the café, and I followed you to the parking lot. You kissed him. And I know it’s not the first time." My voice wavered, but I stood my ground. Liana crossed her arms, her gaze turning cold. "So what if I did? What does it matter to you?" I stared at her, disbelief coursing through me. "Are you serious right now? Theo loves you, Liana. He deserves to know the truth." Her lips curved into a smirk, her eyes glinting with something that resembled cruelty. "I love him, Delilah. The guy you saw? He’s not just some fling. I care about him. I’ve been in love with him for a while now." My stomach twisted at her words. "Then break up with Theo. If you don’t love him, you owe it to him to end things." Liana shook her head, letting out a small laugh. "You don’t get it, do you? Theo’s good for my future. His family’s well-connected. His dad has business ties that will help me later on. I’m not throwing that away." I felt my blood boil, the rage bubbling up inside me. "You’re using him," I muttered. "You’re stringing him along because it’s convenient." Liana’s eyes narrowed. "Grow up, Delilah. Life isn’t all rainbows and fairy tales. Sometimes, you have to do what’s best for yourself." I stared at her, my chest tightening with frustration. She wasn’t going to budge, and I realized with a sinking feeling that no matter what I said, Liana had no intention of breaking up with Theo. She was too selfish to care about his feelings. "Fine," I whispered. "If you won’t tell him, I will." Liana’s smile disappeared, her face hardening. "Do what you want, but trust me, Delilah… no one’s going to believe you." I didn’t respond. I just turned and walked away, my hands shaking with anger and frustration. Liana didn’t deserve Theo, and he didn’t deserve this betrayal. But if she wasn’t going to come clean, I was going to make sure he knew the truth—even if it destroyed everything. After school, I kept an eye on Liana, watching as she left campus. I noticed she didn’t head home. Instead, she got into a car with the same guy I saw her with before. Jonas. Theo’s friend. My heart sank, but I couldn’t stop now. I flagged down a cab and followed them, my pulse racing the entire way. The car drove out of the city, heading toward a quiet, secluded area. My suspicions were growing by the second. They finally pulled into the parking lot of a hotel. Of course, they did. She’s cheating on Theo with his own friend. It was almost too much to process. After paying the driver and thanking him, I followed them from a distance, my phone gripped tightly in my hand. I stayed hidden, snapping pictures as Liana and Jonas walked hand-in-hand into the hotel lobby. They were laughing, smiling—completely oblivious to the fact that they were being watched. I took several photos, making sure I had enough evidence. As they disappeared into the hotel, I laughed bitterly to myself. Theo was the one who had convinced me to buy this new phone, saying I should treat myself to something better. Little did he know, I’d be using it to catch his girlfriend in the act. With the evidence secured, I headed home, my thoughts spinning. I knew what I had to do, but it didn’t make it any easier. I didn’t want to be the one to hurt Theo, but this was bigger than my discomfort. He deserved to know the truth. Later that evening, I created a dummy account, not wanting to expose myself just yet. I sent Theo all the pictures I had taken of Liana and Jonas. As I hit "send," I felt a strange mix of dread and relief. He has to believe me now. There’s no denying the truth. A few minutes passed before my phone buzzed with a notification. I opened the message, expecting anger, hurt, or shock. But instead, Theo’s reply made my blood run cold. "Nice try, but it’s edited." I stared at the message in disbelief. Edited? He thought the photos were fake? I felt a wave of fury rise inside me. How could he be so blind? So stubborn? I typed out a reply, my hands shaking. "Theo, I saw them with my own eyes. Why would I lie about this?" He didn’t respond. I sat there, my chest tight with frustration and helplessness. How was I supposed to convince him when he refused to believe the evidence right in front of him? I threw my phone onto the bed, feeling utterly defeated. Theo was in denial, clinging to his belief in Liana’s perfection. But I knew the truth. And if he wouldn’t believe it now, I’d have to find another way to make him see. As I lay back, staring at the ceiling, one thought echoed in my mind: How long could Liana keep up her charade before everything finally fell apart?
