Chapter Four: Lucy's POV

1857 Words
Lucy was awake when she heard rustling in the kitchen. She got up as quiet as a mouse trying to not scare Jonathan. She slowly crept into the kitchen and hid in the corner, trying not to make a sound. She smiled when he heard him start humming. She longed to reach out to him and have him hold her in his arms. Then soft singing began when he started to chop things, that's when a few questions formed in Lucy's head while she hid in the corner. "Why do you live down here?" Lucy asked quietly. She could tell something was up when his shoulders dropped as he went deep into thought. "When I was young my father used to beat me and ma daily then he accidently died when sawing a tree while wasted. Then my ma a little over a month ago died from cancer, and so I found this bunker and i made it my new home." Jonathan said with tears forming in his eyes.  "And you need me for money why?" Lucy asked coming out of the corner. "Food, water, the lights. No one really remembers the jones family so i stay hidden." he replied going back to finish make the food. Lucy's heart broke when Jonathan said this. He had a family, people he loved. But they were gone. And he was alone. She wanted to comfort him. But she wasn't sure how. "I.... I didn't just take you for money.. I mean, I did originally until I saw the bruises and cuts on you. I didn't mean to look, I swear.. But the wind caught your shirt and that's when I saw .... I'm sorry." Lucy looked down as she crossed her arms. She was embarrassed and upset that he saw the cuts and bruises her father left physically on her. But there were other things left by her father that were not visible to the eye. Her father not only harmed her physically, but mentally as well. The trauma he left behind caused her nightmares. The late nights with little to no sleep due to fear of her father beating her created more stress than she could handle. The more she thought about what happened, the harder it was for her to hold back the tears. She didn't even notice when Jonathan knelt in front of her. When she finally snapped out of her memories, she jumped and hit the back of her head on the wall behind her. "Oh! I'm so sorry I should have said something. Are you okay? Are you bleeding? God I'm an i***t. I'm sorry," Jonathan started apologizing repeatedly as Lucy began giggling. "I'm fine Jonathan, really it's not a big deal," Lucy said as she sat up and giggled. As Lucy sat up, she saw how close Jonathan was. As she looked into his eyes, she could only feel the longing to kiss him. Then, slowly, Jonathan cupped her face and slowly leaned in. Lucy wasn't sure what she was expecting, but it wasn't a kiss. As surprise slowly turned into joy, Lucy wrapped her arms around Jonathan, wanted to get as close to him as she could. When Jonathan picked her up and put her on the counter, she wanted to get even closer to him. She needed him and she knew he needed her. As the kisses became more heated, so did her desires to stay with him. When Jonathan pulled away and stopped, Lucy was hurt. "What's—" Lucy started before Jonathan stopped her from saying another word. "There is someone coming judging by the thumps hitting the earth it's a male. Now, if you want to escape go ahead. I will not stop you.  But if you wish to stay, then hide in the cupboard in the bathroom so I can protect you," Jonathan responded as he stepped away. He wanted her to decide between her heart and her freedom? But did he not realize she needs him? What just happened was not a mistake. It couldn't have been. He couldn't be pushing her away, right? As she made up her mind, she hid in the cupboard in the bathroom, her thoughts racing and her heart aching for him to be with her. She wanted nothing more than for him to be safe. Her body began shaking when images started going through her head of something terrible happening to Jonathan. She couldn't bear the thought of him getting killed. Then, she heard the bunker door swing open and another male's voice. It was hard to hear what was being said, but whatever it was, it wasn't good. The other man sounded older, much unlike Jonathan who sounded like a child. As she caught her breath and slowed her mind down, she finally could hear the conversation going on. "Uncle, please, you're making a big deal over nothing. My father was nothing more than a cheating scumbag who was never going to pay you back. Now leave my bunker," Jonathan said as he attempted to sound tough. She was afraid that Jonathan would get hurt with whoever this man was. As she heard laughter that did not belong to her Jonathan, she also heard the sound of a switchblade opening. A sound she knew all too well. As soon as she heard the knife open, there was the sound of a gasp of pain and the door slamming shut. She couldn't stay in there any longer knowing that Jonathan got hurt. She darted out of the bathroom only to find that Jonathan was in pain as he held his side. Her eyes widened as she frantically tried to assess the situation. When she realized what had most likely happened, she quickly tried to help Jonathan. She wasn't sure where the man who did this was, nor was she too concerned about him. All she could focus on was Jonathan and getting him out of there. She wasn't going to leave him if that guy came back. She couldn't leave him. Not after what happened just minutes before all this happened. "Lucy go, he will be back and I can't have you here to get hurt," Jonathan said through the pain. Lucy refused to leave. She had become attached to Jonathan and wouldn't dare stand by and not do anything to help him if she knew she could. "I'm not leaving you. Come on let's get you cleaned up," Lucy responded as she went to help him up. She could care less where the other guy was. What mattered was Jonathan and that he was going to be ok. "Lucy please...You're the only person I care about right now and if you get hurt," Jonathan begged, even though he knew he was clearly losing the battle. Lucy was an Aries and if there is one thing an Aries doesn't do, it's give up. She would stay strong to her gut instinct and stay with him. Then, the door swung open and the man who Jonathan called uncle stood there. There was a devilish look in the man's eyes. One she knew all too well because of her father. It was the look her father gave her when he was about to start beating her again. It was a look she would no longer cower away from. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Jonathan's uncle yelled, causing Lucy to flinch slightly but not enough to be noticed. Instead she stood a little taller, wanted to show she was brave. "What a pretty young lady you have here boy." She felt Jonathan become defensive as he spoke to his uncle. "Leave her alone she's not a part of this," he said as he slowly got up. His uncle must've hit a nerve by even looking at Lucy. While she was flattered that Jonathan was so protective of her, she needed to stand her ground with this man. The man grabbed Lucy's arm with a smile as she yelped in pain. His grip was too tight. It hurt and she knew that the uncle was enjoying putting her in pain. His grip tightened and she wanted to scream from the pain he was causing. She didn't even know Jonathan had reached for a handheld gun because she was in so much pain. "I said leave her alone," Jonathan spoke with a deadly tone, one Lucy had never thought Jonathan possessed. She was in excruciating pain where Jonathan's uncle held her. Jonathan's uncle let her go and Lucy scrambled over to behind Jonathan with a whimper as she held her arm. She knew she would have a bruise in the morning where the man had grabbed her and she couldn't help but feel like she had failed what she was trying to accomplish. She didn't want the uncle to think she was weak but after what just happened, she knew she failed. When she looked at Jonathan, she saw he was staring down his uncle and worried about him. "Put that down son we don't want someone getting hurt," the uncle said with a grin. "Oh like you didn't hurt me and Ma after dad died. Like you didn't  just hurt Lucy or how you didn't stab me, your own family," Jonathan yelled as his body began to shake. He took his hand that was holding his side and placed it on the gun so he could get a better shot. "And for the record. I am not your son." Those were the last words he said to his uncle as he pulled the trigger, shooting his uncle in the head, instantly killing him. Lucy wasn't prepared for Jonathan to collapse right after he shot his uncle. "Jonathan! Please! Stay awake! You can't do this! Not now!" Lucy began crying out more as she watched his eyes slowly close. She wasn't ready to lose him! He needed to stay awake. She needed him. The last thing she heard him whisper, was her name before his eyes finally closed as he lost consciousness. Lucy panicked she had no idea what to do so she grabbed the first aid kit, a knife and a candle that was lit in the kitchen and rushed to his side. First she opened the rubbing alcohol and poured it on the wound and then placed the knife over the flame trying to get it to the glowing orange color. Once it was glowing she placed it over the wound to close it and wrapped it up after cleaning it again and waited. She didn't know how long he would be out for. Or if he would survive but she said a small prayer and covered him with a blanket and then laid with him. She made a promise that day to both of them. She wasn't going to leave Jonathan if she had any say. As she fell asleep, she curled her small body closer to him, hoping he would be alright and wouldn't die on her. She didn't care how long it would take before he woke up, she was going to stay there as long as it took.
