Zelda's POV
Two weeks later
Ever since the incident at my house, Orion has been avoiding me. He wouldn't talk to me. Sometimes I would catch him looking at me but as soon as I turn he will avert his eyes. He doesn't maintain eye contact. I guess that he is very angry. I missed him. Orion always had a way to cheer me up.
He was the first friend that I made here and I wouldn't want to lose him. Added to that Jennifer has disappeared, for the last two weeks, I haven't seen her. She doesn't pick up my call nor does she reply messages. Even her friends don't know where she is. I'm very worried about. I wonder if she is in some sort of trouble. If so, I have to help her, she is the only person that truly made me feel comfortable about this school.
I decided that I'm going to go visit her. I went to the administration and got her address. I told them that I had some notes to give her and that I lost her address.
I was walking to my locker when I saw Orion leaning against my locker. He was waiting for me. He did not notice me since he was on his phone. When he saw me, he greeted me with a tight hug. Even I was surprised, I did not expect Orion to be the hugging type.
"Hey, I was wondering if you would come for the game tomorrow?"
" No, I have some work to complete, I'm not too sure I will have time."
" Shut up, you are coming with me and that's it. I'm going to pick you up at 8. Be ready."
With that, he walked away.
I got my stuff and got on the bus to the given address. When I reached I did not go to her house directly, I walked around the block a little, thinking about to say. I was anxious, to say the least. Finally, I mustered up my courage and ring her doorbell.
At first, no one answered, then a middle-aged man came out which I suppose is her father.
" Good evening sir, I'm Zelda a friend of Jennifer. Is she home? I have some notes to give her."
" I never saw you around here."
" Yes sir, I just transferred here."
" I'm sorry to say this young lady but she has not returned home since last week. She never stays out for so long."
"Her mother and I even complained to the police station. But so far we haven't heard anything"
I was even more worried now. My heart was pounding and my head was reeling from the impossible scenarios running through it.
Is she safe?
I tried calling her again and again. I was hoping that maybe she will answer. With every unanswered call, my anxiety grew. When I got home, dad was already here, he brought home some Chinese take-out. Looking at my ashen face, he asked me what happened and I broke down in his arm. I told him everything about Jennifer and he assured me that everything will be fine. He said that he had a cop friend that might help us.
We called his friend and I gave her all the details that I knew about her. She said that she and her team are going to try the hardest to find her. My father told me to go out with some friends and not to worry about Jennifer. He told me to relax and that he is going to look for her.
I kept tossing and turning the whole night. I was in a constant state of panic. Wondering as to what may have happened to my friend. During the night I decided that I was going to go to the game as Jennifer is said to be an ardent soccer-lover.
Then I remembered Orion's invitation. I was a bit hesitant to go with him but since I'm not familiar and at ease with the others, I preferred to go with him.
When I woke up in the morning my eyes were puffy from not sleeping well and I had a badass headache. I could feel myself getting sick.
I quickly ate my breakfast and called Melanie, the best-friend of Jennifer. These two were best friends since kindergarten. I'm sure she must have some sort of information on her that could help in the investigation.
I called her and we decided to meet at a local cafe.
It was currently 12:50 pm and no sign of Melanie. We decided to meet at 12. I was getting more anxious as the clock tick-tocked. Finally, I could see the girl.
She pecked my cheeks and sat down in front of me.
" Hey! I'm sorry for coming late, I got caught up in some work"
"No problem"
We both became silent.
"Should we order something?" she asked.
I just nodded along.
We ordered some cheeseburgers and fries. While waiting for our food, the awkwardness at the table was unlike any.
I gathered up my courage and asked her
" When was the last time you talked to Jennifer?"
She looked at me, hesitant at first but she soon started to talk.
" Last time I talked with Jennifer was last week, she seemed pretty upset. She said that she wanted to meet and talk but as I was not in town, I asked her to hang out with me this week. She didn't reply, she just hung up and since that, I've been trying to contact her but in vain."
" Since her sister disappeared, Jennifer turned into a completely different person. She and her sister were very close. They shared everything from secrets to clothes. It's as if she lost her will to live. She pretended to be jovial and happy but the reality is that she is lost without her sister. She was constantly in search of something. A piece of evidence to show that her sister is still alive."
I'm shocked I never knew that Jennifer had a sister.
Melanie continued "I'm afraid that she might have got to know something to do with the disappearance of her sister and she might be in trouble. You know what, you resemble Vanessa a lot... I think that's why she likes you so much."
" You have to help her. Please do something"
"What happened to Vanessa?"
" Vanessa was very beautiful, intelligent and sweet. She was the perfect girl. She used to date Orion but just before her disappearance, they broke up. Since then Orion didn't date anyone. They loved each other a lot. Please don't tell anyone I told you about Vanessa. She is a sensitive topic around here"
Me resembling her sister. Jennifer's and her sister's disappearance. This was so much to take in.
When I left the cafe, my mind was filled with more questions than ever before.
This afternoon's conversation kept playing on a loop in my mind. I was even more confused now. I was laying on my bed trying to come to a conclusion but the constant buzzing of my phone wouldn't let me concentrate.
I looked at my phone, I saw that Orion was calling me, then it came to me that Orion is taking me to the games tonight. I picked up and he told me he is reaching there in fifteen-minute.
I quickly got ready and we went to our seat. Orion looked very handsome with his jeans and a t-shirt of the team that he is supporting. I kept looking around to see if I could see Jenny anywhere. Melanie said that she never misses any basketball match ever.
