Marcus Hale had been Blue Moon's lawyer for eleven years. Territory fights, council challenges, the marriage arrangement that started all of this — he'd sat across this desk through every bit of it, and he'd stopped being surprised by any of it a long time ago.
"The filing was never submitted," he said, and opened the folder between us. "The papers exist. Anna Bennett's signature is on them, properly witnessed and dated. But the submission to the council's legal office requires both parties' completion before dissolution is recognized." He turned the folder to face me. "You never completed your portion. Which means, as of this morning, the marriage is still legally active under pack law."
Active. The word hit me before the rest of the sentence caught up to it.
