The day started just like any other. The sun rose bright over the hills, and the air felt warm and fresh. Elias and Mara had a simple breakfast together and talked about the work ahead. They needed more special timber from a supplier at the edge of the next town, about an hour’s drive away. Elias decided to go himself to make sure the wood was exactly what they wanted. “I will be back before late afternoon,” he told her, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Lock everything up tight while I am gone. Do not open the door for anyone you do not know well. If anything feels wrong, call the shop next door or the neighbors right away.” Mara smiled and patted his arm. “I know the rules. I will be fine. Just drive carefully and come back soon.” He gave her one last look, making sure she was safe
