Chapter Thirteen

1115 Words
Janet had never imagined being lavished with so much attention and material gifts. Ever since Alex had entered her life, it seemed like everything had changed. He was always showering her with presents: designer dresses, the latest gadgets, and luxurious dinners at restaurants she’d only dreamed of visiting. Janet was swept up in the whirlwind of Alex’s world, dazzled by the glamour and ease with which he moved through life. Every time Alex gave her a new gift, Janet felt a mix of gratitude and unease. She hadn’t experienced anything like this before, and although she appreciated his generosity, she couldn’t shake the feeling that it was too much, too fast. Still, Alex had been kind and attentive, and she had grown to trust him more than she’d ever trusted Mark. The shadow of her past with Mark seemed to fade in the bright light of Alex’s affluence. Janet kept her friend Lily updated on all the developments, calling her often to gush about Alex’s latest surprise. “You won’t believe it, Lily! Alex just got me this amazing new dress. It’s the kind you see on red carpets!” Janet exclaimed during one of their calls. Lily listened with a mixture of concern and disbelief. “Janet, I don’t know. It sounds like he’s trying to buy your affection. Aren’t you worried about what he might expect in return?” Janet laughed, dismissing her friend’s concerns. “No, it’s not like that, Lily. Alex is just generous. He likes making me happy.” “Still, be careful,” Lily warned. “I just don’t want you getting hurt.” Janet appreciated Lily’s concern but felt she was overreacting. Alex had never asked for anything in return, and she was confident that he was genuine in his affections. One afternoon, as Janet sat in her dorm room, she received a call from Alex. “Hey, Janet. Can you come down? I’m outside with the car. I want to take you somewhere special.” “Where are we going?” Janet asked, intrigued. “It’s a surprise,” Alex replied cryptically. “You’ll love it, I promise.” Janet felt a flutter of excitement. Alex’s surprises were always extravagant and memorable. She quickly got ready and headed downstairs. As she approached Alex’s sleek car, her phone buzzed with a message from Lily: “I’m at your school gate! Surprise!” Janet was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Lily to visit, but the timing couldn’t have been better. She dashed to the gate, where she found Lily waiting with a wide smile. “Lily!” Janet hugged her friend tightly. “What are you doing here?” “I missed you,” Lily said simply. “Thought I’d come by and catch up.” Janet was thrilled to see her friend and immediately filled her in on Alex’s invitation. “Alex wants to take me somewhere, but I don’t know where. You should come with us!” Lily hesitated, sensing something off about the situation. “I don’t know, Janet. I’m not really comfortable going. Maybe we can hang out later?” Just then, Alex walked over, his expression cheerful. “Hey, you must be Lily! Janet’s told me a lot about you.” “Nice to meet you,” Lily replied politely but cautiously. “Why don’t you join us?” Alex suggested, flashing a charming smile. “It’ll be fun.” Lily shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I have to decline. Janet, we can catch up another time, okay?” Janet was torn. She didn’t want to disappoint Alex, but she also didn’t want to leave Lily. “Maybe we can reschedule, Alex? I really want to spend time with Lily today.” Alex’s smile faltered slightly, but he quickly recovered. “Of course. Another time then.” As they watched Alex drive away, Janet felt a slight pang of guilt but pushed it aside. She turned her attention back to Lily, eager to enjoy their time together. Meanwhile, Alex drove to a secluded location on the outskirts of the city. His face was a mask of frustration and desperation. He parked the car and walked briskly into a dimly lit room where an old herbalist awaited him. “You’re running out of time, Alex,” the herbalist warned, her voice raspy and filled with foreboding. “You have only one day left. If you fail to bring the girl, the consequences will be dire.” Alex’s mind raced. He had been tasked with finding someone for the ritual redemption—someone who could ensure his continued prosperity and power. Janet had been the perfect target: trusting, innocent, and unknowing of the darkness lurking beneath his charm. But with her friend’s unexpected arrival, his plans had been thwarted. “I know,” Alex replied tersely. “But it’s complicated. She’s always surrounded by friends now.” “No excuses,” the herbalist snapped. “You must act quickly. If the ritual is not completed by tomorrow night, the powers that protect you will turn against you.” Alex nodded, his mind spinning with possibilities. He couldn’t afford to fail. His entire future depended on the success of this ritual, and he would do whatever it took to make it happen. As he left the herbalist’s den, Alex’s thoughts were consumed by the urgency of his predicament. He needed a new plan, a way to lure Janet without arousing suspicion. The clock was ticking, and his desperation grew with each passing moment. Back on campus, Janet and Lily spent the afternoon reminiscing about old times, laughing and sharing stories. For a few hours, Janet forgot about the complexities of her life, enjoying the simplicity of friendship. But as the sun began to set, a lingering unease settled over Janet. Something about Alex’s reaction to her cancellation felt off. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye. Later that night, as Janet lay in bed, her phone buzzed again. It was another message, this time from an unknown number: “Be careful, Janet. Trust no one.” Janet’s heart raced as she read the words. The warning echoed the one she had received earlier, leaving her with more questions than answers. Who was sending these messages, and why? And what exactly was she supposed to be cautious about? The uncertainty gnawed at her, casting a shadow over her thoughts. Janet knew she had to be vigilant, but the truth remained elusive. Little did she know, the danger was far closer than she realized, and the next 24 hours would test her trust, her courage, and her very survival.
