Chapter Ten

Then, one evening, everything changed. Janet stopped by Mark’s dorm after class, planning to drop off some notes he had asked to borrow. As she approached his room, she heard voices inside, one of which sounded like Mark’s. Curious, Janet paused, listening. “Come on, just one more,” Mark’s voice said, his tone eager. Janet frowned, unsure of what to make of it. She knocked softly, but there was no response. She knocked again, louder this time, and the voices inside ceased abruptly. The door swung open, and Mark stood there, his face flushed and eyes wide with surprise. “Janet! What are you doing here?” he stammered, blocking the doorway. “I brought the notes you needed,” she said, trying to peer past him into the room. Mark hesitated, then stepped aside reluctantly. As Janet entered, she noticed his laptop was open, the screen displaying a paused video. She recognized the site immediately, her heart sinking. “Mark…” Janet began, her voice filled with disappointment. “I know, I know,” Mark interrupted, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “I tried to stop, but it’s hard. I thought I could handle it.” Janet took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. “I care about you, Mark. But you need to be honest with yourself and get help if you can’t control it.” Mark nodded, his expression conflicted. “I don’t want to lose you as a friend, Janet. You’re one of the few people who actually cares.” “I’m here for you, but you have to take responsibility for your actions,” Janet said gently. “You can’t let this control you.” Mark sighed, his shoulders slumping. “I know. I’ll try harder.” Janet nodded, hoping he was sincere. She wanted to believe he could change, but she knew it would take more than promises. A few days later, Janet visited Mark again, hoping to see progress. As she entered his room, she found him pacing, his expression anxious. He seemed restless, unable to settle down. “Janet, I need to talk to you,” Mark said, his voice tense. “Sure, what’s going on?” Janet asked, concerned. “I’ve been struggling,” Mark admitted, avoiding her gaze. “It’s like no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop.” Janet felt a pang of sympathy. She knew addiction was a difficult battle. “Have you thought about getting help?” she asked gently. Mark nodded. “Yeah, I’ve been looking into it. But it’s embarrassing, you know?” “It’s nothing to be ashamed of,” Janet said, offering a reassuring smile. “Acknowledging the problem is the first step to overcoming it.” Mark looked at her, his eyes filled with gratitude. “Thanks, Janet. I’m really lucky to have you as a friend.” Janet smiled, hoping that Mark would follow through with his intentions. She wanted to see him free from the chains of his addiction, to see him happy and whole. But then, everything took a dark turn. One evening, Janet decided to surprise Mark with dinner. As she approached his room, she noticed the door was slightly ajar. She knocked softly, calling out, “Mark? Are you there?” When there was no response, Janet hesitated, then pushed the door open. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Mark sitting on the edge of his bed, his expression twisted with turmoil. His laptop was open, and Janet recognized the telltale signs of what he had been watching. “Mark…” Janet began, her voice filled with concern. Before she could say more, Mark stood up abruptly, his eyes wild. “I’m sorry, Janet. I didn’t mean for you to see this.” “It’s okay, Mark,” Janet said soothingly, trying to calm him down. “I just want to help.” But Mark’s frustration seemed to reach a breaking point. He took a step toward her, his demeanor suddenly tense. “I can’t take this anymore,” he said, his voice strained. “I need to feel something real.” Janet’s instincts screamed at her to leave, but she hesitated, not wanting to abandon him. “Mark, please, let’s talk about this,” she said, backing away slowly. Mark moved closer, his intentions unclear. Panic surged through Janet, and she realized she had to get out of there. She turned and ran, her heart pounding in her chest. Behind her, Mark called out, his voice filled with regret. “Janet, wait! I didn’t mean—” But Janet didn’t stop. She fled the dormitory, her mind racing with fear and confusion. She couldn’t believe what had just happened, couldn’t understand how things had spiraled so quickly. As she reached the safety of her own room, Janet collapsed onto her bed, her mind reeling. She knew she had to tell someone, to get help for Mark before he hurt himself or someone else. The encounter had shaken her to her core, leaving her feeling vulnerable and betrayed. But deep down, she still believed Mark could change, that he could find a way to overcome his struggles. Janet resolved to take action, to do whatever it took to protect herself and help Mark find the path to healing. She knew the journey ahead would be difficult, but she was determined to face it with courage and strength. The story was far from over, and Janet was ready to confront the challenges ahead, her heart filled with hope and determination
