Chapter 7: Humans Aren't Allowed

1419 Words
The next morning, Northern Ridge was deceptively calm. Snow blanketed the forest in white, hiding the shadows and the threat that had lurked so close the night before. But Elena could feel it—tension lingering in the air like an unspoken warning. She had spent the night in the Alpha wing, the silver mark on her chest still faintly glowing, a constant reminder that she didn’t belong. And yet… she couldn’t shake the growing pull of the bond. Kael stood at the window, arms crossed, eyes scanning the trees. Even in human form, he radiated the presence of a predator. “Elena,” he said without turning. “Pack meeting. Now.” Her stomach clenched. “Pack meeting?” “Yes. Everyone needs to see you—formally,” he said, voice flat but firm. “And not all reactions will be pleasant.” She nodded, heart racing. Following Kael down the stone steps of the pack house, she noticed dozens of eyes on her—curious, cautious, suspicious. Whispers rose as they passed: “Human…” “Alpha’s mate…” “Forbidden…” Elena swallowed hard. She didn’t like being the center of attention. And here, she wasn’t just human—she was a symbol of rebellion, of something the pack might not accept. The council chamber was a large circular room, stone walls lined with torchlight. Wolves of every age and rank stood or sat, watching the two of them enter. Kael’s voice cut through the murmurs. “This is Elena.” A ripple ran through the crowd. Elena stepped forward, chin high, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in her chest. A tall, lean warrior stepped forward first, arms crossed. His silver eyes were sharp, calculating. “Alpha Blackmoor,” he said, voice dripping skepticism, “are you seriously bringing a human into pack territory?” Kael’s gaze was sharp. “Yes. She is under my protection.” The warrior scoffed. “A human? They don’t survive in this world. They don’t belong.” Elena’s chest tightened. She opened her mouth, but Kael raised a hand. “I will speak for her,” Kael said evenly. “Humans aren’t allowed in the territory because they are vulnerable. But Elena is not just a human—she is marked.” Whispers erupted. “Marked? Impossible!” Kael’s eyes swept the room. “The Moon chose her. And as long as she is with me, she is under my protection. Anyone who challenges that is challenging me.” Murmurs turned into low growls. Some pack members glanced nervously at one another; others looked openly angry. Elena swallowed hard. “I… I don’t want to cause trouble,” she said quietly. Kael’s gaze softened, just for a moment. “You won’t. I will handle this.” The lean warrior stepped closer, voice low and dangerous. “Alpha, this sets a dangerous precedent. What will the Council say? And the other packs?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “The Council will complain. Other packs may protest. But I am Alpha here. Elena stays.” A low hum of agreement and dissent ran through the room. Elena felt the weight of their scrutiny pressing down on her. She wanted to shrink away, hide… but the mark throbbed against her chest, reminding her she was no longer ordinary. Then another figure stepped forward—Selene, acting Luna. Her silver-gray eyes swept the room, then landed on Elena. “She’s human,” Selene said coldly. “And humans are not allowed. The Council will not forgive this.” Kael’s hand hovered near Elena’s shoulder, protective. “We are not seeking permission,” he said. “She is mine. And she will not be harmed.” Selene’s gaze hardened. “That bond… it could destroy the balance.” Elena felt the silver mark pulse in response. The bond inside her stirred, almost like it recognized Selene’s warning as a challenge. Kael’s silver eyes met hers. “Ignore them. Focus on me.” The room went silent for a moment. Every eye was on them. Every whisper had stopped. The tension was so thick, Elena could almost taste it. She took a deep breath. The bond hummed beneath her skin, reminding her of her power… her choice. And for the first time, she felt that maybe she could survive this world after all. But outside the council chamber, the wind carried a howl—not far, not soft. Another reminder: danger was never far behind. And the pack’s acceptance? That would be the hardest part. The council chamber felt like it was holding its breath. Every wolf in the room watched Elena like she was both a miracle and a threat. Their eyes flicked from her to Kael, then back again, measuring, judging, calculating. Selene stepped forward, her presence commanding. “Alpha Blackmoor,” she said, voice cold as ice, “allowing a human—marked or not—sets a dangerous precedent. The Council will hear of this. Other packs will challenge you. Do you truly intend to defy centuries of law?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Yes.” Murmurs rose through the room. Some wolves shifted uneasily; others openly snarled in disagreement. A tall warrior—the same one who had questioned Elena earlier—stepped forward again. “Alpha, are you putting your pack at risk? For a human?” Elena’s stomach knotted. She opened her mouth to speak, but Kael’s sharp glance silenced her. “She’s not just a human,” Kael said, his voice cutting through the tension like steel. “She carries the mark of the Moon. The bond has chosen her. And if anyone here challenges her, they challenge me.” A ripple of silence followed. The weight of Kael’s words—of his Alpha presence—settled over the pack like a storm. Selene’s eyes narrowed. “The mark… it shouldn’t exist in a human. This could destabilize not just your pack, Alpha, but the balance across the Northern Ridge. You are playing with fire.” Kael’s hand brushed lightly against Elena’s shoulder. “I am aware of the risks. And I accept them. Elena stays.” Murmurs shifted to quiet murmurs of unease, fear, and reluctant respect. Some wolves bowed their heads; others muttered under their breath, obviously displeased. Elena swallowed hard, feeling the weight of every pair of eyes in the room. She felt small, vulnerable—and yet, the bond thrummed beneath her skin, steady, protective, alive. She glanced at Kael. The silver glow in his eyes met hers, unflinching. “Focus on me,” he whispered, voice low but commanding. Her chest tightened. “Yes.” He gave her a reassuring nod and turned back to the pack. “You all may not understand her, or the bond she carries. But let me be clear—she is under my protection. Any harm that comes to her will come through me.” The council chamber was silent again. Even Selene’s sharp gaze faltered under the force of Kael’s presence. Finally, Mira stepped forward, voice gentle but firm. “The pack may not fully understand, but the mark is real. And it responds to her presence.” She glanced at Elena. “Do not doubt yourself, child. You are stronger than you realize.” Elena felt the silver glow pulse brighter, almost like a heartbeat syncing with hers. Selene’s voice cut through the silence once more, colder than before. “This will not end quietly, Alpha. The Council will not remain silent for long. And rogue activity… is increasing.” Kael’s eyes darkened. “Then let them come. Elena will not be alone.” The silver mark flared beneath Elena’s skin—brighter than ever. She felt heat, power, and something like resolve coursing through her veins. For the first time, she realized: she was no longer just a human. She was part of this world, part of the bond, and part of Kael’s life in a way she hadn’t even imagined. And anyone who threatened her… would face the Alpha. A howl cut through the stone walls, echoing from the forest outside—low, deep, dangerous. Not far. Selene’s eyes narrowed. “The rogues are near. They know where she is.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then we prepare. Because tonight… the hunt begins.” Elena’s heart pounded as the silver mark flared once more, warning and promising: the danger was real, the bond was alive, and nothing would ever be the same.
