Chapter 8: Luna's Warning

The howl echoed again—closer this time—shaking the snow-laden forest around Northern Ridge. Elena’s pulse raced as she followed Kael through the stone corridors of the pack house. “The rogues are testing the borders,” Kael said, voice low, eyes scanning every shadow. “They want to know where you are.” Elena’s hands trembled. “I don’t understand… why me? Why now?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Because the bond exists in you. The Moon never marks humans without purpose. You are a threat to them—and to anyone who underestimates you.” A sudden gust of wind rattled the windows. Elena shivered. The silver glow beneath her skin flared, almost like a heartbeat reacting to the danger. Before she could ask another question, the air shifted. The torches flickered violently. A presence entered the room—ancient, commanding, undeniable. “The Moon Council,” Kael murmured. Elena froze. Her eyes widened as a figure stepped through the doorway—a tall woman with flowing white robes that shimmered like starlight. Her hair was silver, braided intricately, and her eyes glowed faintly under the torchlight. “Alpha Blackmoor,” the Luna said, her voice melodic yet cutting. “And the human who bears the forbidden mark.” Elena swallowed hard. The mark throbbed beneath her skin as if reacting to the Luna herself. Kael moved in front of her instinctively. “Luna Seraphine,” he said, formal but wary. “What brings the Council here?” Seraphine’s gaze swept over the room, landing on every pack member. “A human bearing the mate mark. Such a thing should not exist. The Moon did not intend it, and the consequences… could be catastrophic.” Elena’s chest tightened. “I—I didn’t ask for this!” Seraphine’s eyes softened slightly, but her tone remained firm. “Few do. The Moon chooses. The bond awakens regardless of consent. That is why the Council intervenes.” Kael’s jaw clenched. “And what is your decision?” “You have seven days to prove the bond is stable,” Seraphine said, her gaze fixing on Elena. “Seven days for the mark to solidify… or for it to be removed. Permanently.” Elena’s heart thudded. “Removed? How… what does that mean?” “The bond will break,” Seraphine said. “The power will leave you. The connection to the Alpha will be severed. You may survive… but you will never feel it again. And the rogues—those who hunt the weak—will sense your vulnerability.” Elena swallowed. Fear twisted her gut, but she lifted her chin. “So I have seven days… to survive, and to… choose?” “Yes,” the Luna said, her eyes piercing. “And know this: once the mark awakens fully, there is no returning to the world you came from. You are no longer just human. You are… part of the Moon’s will.” Kael stepped closer, hands clenched at his sides. “Then I will protect her,” he said, his voice low but deadly. “Even if the Council disapproves. Even if the world comes for us both.” Seraphine’s gaze shifted to him. “Alpha Blackmoor… the Moon recognizes your bond. But your power alone cannot shield her from what may come.” Elena’s chest tightened. She looked at Kael, silver eyes glowing faintly, full of fierce determination. “Then we face it together,” he said, voice steady. “Whatever comes.” Seraphine inclined her head slightly, a subtle acknowledgement of his answer. Then she turned, robes whispering, and left the chamber as silently as she had arrived. The room exhaled as if a storm had passed—but the tension remained. Elena pressed a hand to her chest, feeling the silver mark pulse in response to the Luna’s warning. “Seven days,” she whispered. “Seven days to decide… my life, my bond… everything.” Kael’s hand covered hers, grounding her. “You’re not alone,” he said softly. “Not now. Not ever.” But deep in the forest, unseen eyes watched, calculating. The rogues would not wait. The Council’s judgment hung over them. And the bond inside Elena… was growing, stronger and more insistent with every heartbeat. The real test had only just begun. The chamber emptied slowly after the Luna’s departure, leaving an uneasy silence in her wake. Even the pack members who had been skeptical now cast furtive glances at Elena, their expressions a mix of awe, suspicion, and fear. Elena’s fingers pressed against the silver mark on her chest, which now throbbed with a persistent, almost impatient pulse. She could feel it stretching through her veins like fire, whispering secrets she didn’t yet understand. Kael stayed close, his presence a steady anchor. “Focus on me,” he said quietly. “The mark will guide you… but only if you let it.” “I’m trying,” she whispered, heart racing. “But it’s… it’s too strong.” He reached out, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “That’s because it wants to protect you. That’s what the Moon intended. You’re not just human anymore. You’re part of something greater—and dangerous.” Elena’s breath hitched as she absorbed the weight of his words. Her body hummed with energy, and for the first time, she understood why the rogues and even the pack were wary. This bond made her a weapon—one she hadn’t chosen. Mira stepped forward, her eyes calm but probing. “You need to rest. But know this—the bond doesn’t wait for comfort or safety. It will awaken in moments you cannot anticipate. The pack must accept it, or tensions will rise.” Elena swallowed hard. “Tensions are already high. Everyone here looks at me like I’m… dangerous.” “Good,” Kael said firmly. “Let them be afraid. It keeps them in check.” Before Elena could respond, a low rumble vibrated through the stone walls—the distant howls of the rogues, sharpening with intent. Kael stiffened. “They’re testing the boundaries again. They’re circling closer. Tonight, we might have our first real confrontation.” Elena felt the mark flare beneath her skin. The bond pulsed as if in agreement—alive, aware, insistent. Her body trembled with a mix of fear and exhilaration. “I—I don’t know if I’m ready,” she admitted, voice shaking. “You are,” Kael said, placing his hand over hers again. His touch was grounding, protective. “The Moon chose you. I will stand with you, and so will the pack members who follow me. The rest… we’ll manage.” Her gaze flicked to the others in the room. Some stared openly, unsure, skeptical. Others avoided her eyes entirely, muttering under their breath. Kael’s silver eyes met hers, unwavering. “You’re not alone. Not now. Not ever. We face this together—rogues, the Council, anyone who threatens you. Together.” Elena felt a spark of determination ignite within her. The bond pulsed stronger, almost like a heartbeat syncing with hers. Outside, the wind carried a distant, low howl—a warning, a promise, a threat. The pack would have to accept her. The rogues would come. And the bond… the bond would not wait. Elena drew a deep breath, hand pressed to her chest, silver light blazing faintly beneath her skin. She was no longer just human. She was marked. She was chosen. And the game had only just begun.
