Chapter Ten

The rain carried on for long hours and the hours became dull.  Sometimes I looked at him and couldn't help notice his abs, his chest and his patch of small hairs and his arms.  It was starting to become difficult for me to take my eyes off him.  I tried to avoid looking at him, but I couldn't help myself.  He was smoking hot.  I walked up to him and reached out to touch his bone and shark teeth necklace.  As soon as he noticed he backed away from me. "Don't," he said. "I just want to see it," I replied. "You have seen it," he remarked annoyed.  I crossed my arms. "What's your problem?" I asked him. "I don't like people touching my necklace," he said.   "I wasn't going to break it," I told him annoyed. "I didn't say you would. It's just... very special to me..." he said, but he didn't explain in what way.  "Okay, whatever.  I'm bored in here," I said.  He looked at me. "You are blaming me for your boredom?" He asked me and I shook my head. "No," I replied. "You thought that touching my necklace would steer you away from your boredom?" He asked me.   "I suppose," I replied.  He looked at me and I grabbed a long stick that laid on the ground. "Can you light this for me?" I asked him.  Nicholas nodded.  He grabbed two sticks and began to do his magic.  Soon he lit the fire and I used the long stick as a torch.  I began to walk deeper into the cave. "What are you doing?" Nicholas asked me. "I'm an adventurer.  I'm going to explore the cave," I replied.    "Don't go too far down.  You don't know what might be down there," Nicholas said.  I ignored him and walked on. "Well, if something happens to me, I've got you to save me," I replied and marched on.  The cave became darker with each pace.  The cave had stalactites on the ceiling and stalagmites growing from the floor.  I could see bats nearby the stalactites, hanging and sleeping with their wings wrapped around their bodies.  I heaved nervously because I didn't like the idea of encountering bats.  I carried on with my walk and found myself with a clear open area where there was a small round pond in a corner. "Nice," I told myself and walked towards the pond.  I touched the water, it was ice cold. "Ouch," I complained and blew my hand.  I couldn't believe it was so cold.  I was going to leave, but then something in the walls of the cave drew my attention. "What is that?" I wondered and walked towards the wall carefully.  I raised the torch to see what was on the wall.   "What is that?" I repeated and paced a few steps back.  It looked like... an ancient painting.  At first it was messy and I didn't really understand, but as I continued to glance at it and follow the lines I realized that they were paintings of... mermaids and mermen.  That was strange I thought.  I approached the wall and touched the markings and the paint.   "Mermaids..." I mumbled. "And mermen... they count to," Nicholas said behind me.  I tilted my head and turned my entire body scared.  I hadn't even heard him approach. "Nick?" I asked just to be sure that it was him.  He walked towards me and then stood next to me. "Yeah?" He asked me.   "You knew about this?" I asked him.  He shook his head. "Not really.  It seems like you've discovered some mythological art in these caves.  Congratulations," he told me, but he didn't seem so excited about the discovery.  He said it without much emotion. "You seem so excited about it," I remarked. "I don't like it here.  It's dangerous.  We should go," he said.  I looked around and wasn't sure if he was telling the truth or not, but decided to trust him.  He had saved my life before, so maybe he was right.   "Give me your hand," he said.  I stared at his deep blue eyes for a moment and was mesmerized by them.  I couldn't help myself.  It was so rare to see someone with that eye color in the island that they just immediately hypnotized me.  I grabbed his hand and he pulled me towards him.  He looked at my lips and then very gently his lips fell on my forehead.  I closed my eyes feeling embarrassed but pretended that it was nothing. "Come," he said.  I allowed him to take me through the cave and out.  It was no longer raining, but everything was moist and humid.  The mosquitoes began to come out and bite.  They were becoming a bother. "Oh, I have an idea," Nick said.  He squatted down and grabbed sand and rubbed it on my arms.  He squatted again, scooped up more sand and was about to put it on my chest, but I stopped him. "Hey, hey, hey. I'll do it," I said.  I snatched the sand from his hand and rubbed it on my chest. "I think I can continue on by my own," I said and he nodded in agreement.  I rubbed on my legs and caught him looking at them.  He immediately changed his stare elsewhere.  It was getting dark and we were walking around with the torch, returning to where we were during the afternoon. "Do you think it's a good idea to stay here?" I asked him and he nodded. "We've been here for the last few days.  It will be alright," He said.  I lied down, but the deadwood was wet and it bothered me.  I started to scratch my buttocks. "If you need help scratching I can help," he said approaching me.  I felt a little fear and waved him away.  I stopped scratching my buttocks. "I don't think I can sleep here," I said. "How about the boat?" Nicholas asked me.   "That's the best idea you've come up with so far," I said. "Lead the way," he told me and so I did.  We reached the boat which was now on land.  I got in and Nick followed.   "This is more like it," I said lying on the floor.  It was so much better than the wet deadwood and leaves.  We both lied together, one next to the other.  It felt strange.  I had never slept next to a boy before and my heart started to pound really quickly.  I was nervous. "Goodnight," I said trying to avoid him and I turned my back against him and lied sideways. "Goodnight to you too," Nick said turning and touching my back with his.  Despite the fact that the boat was more comfortable than the wet sand I couldn't sleep throughout the night because I was thinking about the boy sleeping next to me.
