Chapter Fourteen

1152 Words
It was good that we found ourselves laughing about something.  I felt the tension between us ease and I didn't feel that Nick was angry with me anymore.  It was strange though.  Sometimes I felt he was all man and other times I felt as if he were a small child.   "I don't want to be angry at you.  I don't like how it feels," he said to me.  I nodded in agreement. "Good.  I don't want you to be angry at me either because I don't like how it feels either," he said.  We shook hands. "Good," he said.  I turned and searched for another can of pears.  I figured it was only fair he'd at least know what I was eating. "Look," I said showing him the can.   "Not another one," he said.  I shook my head. "It's food.  Fruit.  These are pears," I said. "Pears?" He asked.  Sometimes my heart went out for him.  I didn't know how long he had been in the island, but I promised myself that if I could, I would take him off this island so that he could come to mine.  I had so many questions.  While I looked at him studying the can I wondered who his parents were and how had he managed to survive so long alone on this island.  It was true, he was courageous.  He had saved me from the ocean's grip twice.  He wasn't just a courageous hero though, he was also a healer.  He had healed me throughout my pain.  I looked at him and smiled at his childish ways. "I don't understand," he said. "Okay, give it to me," I said and he did.  I opened the can. "You have to be careful with this top because it's really sharp and it cuts, same as the inside, but you already know that," I said.  I took the top and placed it on the floor of the boat.  Then, I grabbed something that looked like a plate and poured the pairs there so that he wouldn't cut himself.  He snatched one of the pairs and placed it in his mouth.  He looked so funny because the piece of pear he had taken was enormous, so his mouth looked enormous as he chewed on it.  I had to laugh. "What?" He said with his mouth half full.  I shook my head. "Nothing," I said.  He looked at me curiously and I had to laugh harder.  When he was done with the pear he asked me again why I was laughing. "Nothing, you just look funny," I said.   "Oh yeah?  Really?" He asked.  He snatched another pear and chewed, his mouth huge and I laughed again.  He seemed to like to see me laugh because he did it over and over again until there were no pears left.  I was laughing so much I almost cried.   "Oh God.  I think I'm going to pee myself," I said laughing.  He started to make funny noises and then he placed his nose on my neck.  He moved it sideways as fast as he could tickling me there and I giggled.   "No, no," I said, but kept laughing.  Then, for a moment we froze and we looked at each other again.  His eyes were mesmerizing.  For a moment I was almost hypnotized.  Then, I heard a whistle and immediately stood up. "What's that?" I asked looking out at the sea.   "Oh, that?  That's just my friend, Tala," he said.  I frowned confused. "Tala?" I asked him.   "Yeah.  She's a... a dolphin," he said. "A dolphin?" I asked and then I heard the whistles again.  I looked out at the water and saw a grey fin.  "Tala!" I yelled and she did those cute, funny noises that dolphins usually did.  I laughed. "Would you like to meet her?" He asked me. "What do you mean?" I asked him. "Well... come," he said extending his hand at me.  I grabbed it and he guided me down the boat. I felt nervous when we started to head for the water though. "Umm... I don't know if I want to-" "It'll be fine.  I promise," he said.  I trusted him.  I walked with him a little bit and we walked until the water covered me only to my stomach.  Then he whistled at the dolphin.  "Tala," he said as he whistled again.  The dolphin moved quickly under the water.  She swam to us and started to swim around us playfully.  She squeaked and then laughed right at me.  I was a little nervous as I saw her teeth, but Nick encouraged me to pet it. "It's okay.  She's harmless," Nick said.  Nervously, I placed my hand over its mouth and touched it.  The dolphin felt smooth and rubbery.  I looked at Nick surprised and laughed.  "Since when have you had her?" I asked him.  He shook his head. "She's a friend and she's been with me for a long time.  Haven't you Tala?" He said and the dolphin seemed to respond to him quite well. "Cool," I said.   "Tala, say hi to Karina," Nick said.  Tala waved her fin at her.  "Awe... how cute," I said and then I attempted to grab the dolphin's fin with gentleness. "She likes you," Nick said. "Really?" I said with a smile.  Nick nodded. "Yeah," he replied.  Then Nick began to pet her.  He seemed very fond of her.  I smiled. "She wants me to swim with her.  Is it okay if I-" "Sure.  Go do your thing," I said. "Are you sure?  If you don't want to be alone here..." Nick said. "Na, I'm fine.  Besides, I think it's time I did something on my own," I said.  Nick nodded in agreement.   "Okay.  But if you need anything, call me," he said.  I nodded.  He dived in the water like a professional athlete.  I had never watched him swim before.  I couldn't believe how efficient he really was at it.  He swam really fast, almost as fast as Tala.  Then he grabbed her fin and she took him swimming right out there in the ocean.  I was a little scared for him.  What if he drowned?  Na. He knew these waters like the back of his hand.  It was cool.  I had never seen anyone so proficient though and I wondered how the hell could he hold his breath like that.  Genes, I thought to myself.  Of course.  He had great genes.  I noticed his back, his shoulders and his legs, they were all slim, but strong.   "Wish I had those genes," I thought to myself.  I decided to head to the forest area and got an idea. "I think I'm going to see how the house is holding up," I said to myself out loud and I walked in that direction wanting to see how everything was looking.  I decided not to have any expectations about it.
