The crossing of the Renviss Straits presented Ralph Lowson’s team with design and construction problems well above the average. Extremes of temperature, most unzephyr-like breezes, fast and turbulent currents and the need to have the structure protected against missile and other attacks, plus the occasional earthquake to stir things up, came to an impressive total. The crossing was to be almost a mile wide, narrowing only towards the centre where a great bridge would arch across the deep channel which was the path of the original river. Seeing a model of the scheme, the Great Father’s eyes had glinted when they lit on the bridge. “Ah,” he said, breathlessly. “It will be a covenant to my people for generations in perpetuity as they spread the Lord’s message across the face of the earth.”
