Freddy called to say she was stranded at her friend’s house. John told her not to make any attempt to try and come home as a blizzard was blowing up.
“It looks as if it’ll be a bad one,” he said. “Give me a ring tomorrow. Lots of love.”
He was actually glad of the opportunity to be alone. There was no reason why anything should go wrong, but he could not help feeling a little fretful, just waiting.
Hugh and Minna were across the world fulfilling their tasks and Phillip and d**k would do theirs faithfully, he knew. The next few months were going to be very interesting, but whatever happened, life for himself and his two sons was going to be much more hopeful and free.
The phone startled him out of his reverie.
“John?” said a strange voice.
“Yes,” he replied hesitantly.
