Chapter 2 “Why don't you send someone else? Do you really have to go?” I pleaded with Elliot once more as he dragged his suitcase outside the duplex where we stayed. “You know how important work is; I need to leave. Dad is here and he'll take care of you,” he said, motioning to his father. “Right, Dad?” His dad nodded and stepped inside. “Don't worry, Lyra. I'll take care of you and make sure you lack nothing,” he said as he placed his hand around my shoulders and pulled me close. Elliot was too stupid and blind with work to understand what his dad actually meant by those words. “Thanks, Dad,” he said as he kissed me on the cheek. “See you in a week.” He got into the car and drove out. “It's just us now,” Kevin said as he dropped his hand to my waist. Elliot’s back was turned to us as he drove away. “I guess,” I said, turning around. However, my calf chose that exact moment to cramp. I bent over with a cry of pain. “Are you okay?” Kevin was quickly by my side. I shook my head and pointed to my leg, muted by the pain. He seemed to understand, because he lifted me up bridal style and carried me back into the living room. Then, gently, he settled me on the long sofa. I felt a quick relief from being lifted off the ground, and my cheeks blushed, though I wouldn't admit why. Kevin's hands might have wandered upward when he carried me, but even he seemed oblivious to the effect he had on me. Lyra, you should remain oblivious too, I scolded myself. He's my father-in-law, and more than that, I wasn't sure if I wanted this child. “What's the issue?” he asked frantically as he raised my feet and checked for scars. “I'm fine now,” I smiled. I couldn't help myself. Elliot only wanted me for a wife and couldn't be bothered about what I did otherwise, but his father was so different I wondered if they were truly related. Kevin showered me with emotions and gifts while we were seeing each other, and among all the men I'd been with in my life, he was the most generous. He paid for every expense I encountered without me having to ask twice. “You seem to be in pain. I might not be a doctor, but I noticed that much,” he said. “It's just cramps in my calves, but I feel better now. I promise.” “That's not enough.” He sprang to his feet and disappeared into his room. There were two guest rooms and one master bedroom, which Elliot and I shared. A few seconds later, he came out with a bottle in hand and returned to his kneeling position in front of me. At first, I thought he was going to propose. Elliot hadn't. I doubted if he'd even considered it, but despite his nonchalant attitude, I had held onto him as my last hope. “This oil lotion was imported from China for cramps like this. A friend gifted it some months back. Who knew it'd be so useful eventually?” He chuckled as he uncapped the bottle and squirted some onto his palm. The sound of his dry palms rubbing together soon turned into a slick, squelching sound. Unexpectedly, he grabbed my knee and placed it on his thick triceps. The muscles flexed upon contact. He continued rubbing until my senses could only focus on the root scent. Ginseng? The relief it brought to my body was so calming I had no choice but to relax into the couch and rest my head. “How do you feel now?” he asked as his massage reached another level, touching my knees and moving up my thigh. I spread my legs as a reflex and allowed his hands to linger a little longer there before nodding. “Hmm, good.” My moan startled me out of my relaxed state, and I sat up in a hurry. The ringtone of my phone diffused the awkwardness. “Pick it up,” he said as he rose to his feet, closed the cap of the bottle, and went into his room. He returned with a new set of shorts long after my call ended. I had an idea why he'd changed his shorts, but I pretended not to notice. It would only make things more awkward. “Was that Elliot?” he asked. I shook my head. “Jake.” He c****d his head and raised his eyebrows in a question. “My stepdad,” I added. “Oh,” he nodded. “The doctor. What does he want?” “He said he's on his way and asked if I could come receive him outside the penthouse. The guard won't let him in,” I said. The area had private security because it was mostly occupied by people who wanted private lives. While I doubted Elliot had anything to hide, he lived here as the sole heir to his father's real estate agency. So, it was understandable. “I'll bring him in. You shouldn't go back and forth too much. We're on the 12th floor,” he said. “Oh, it's fine. You don't have to,” I said as I pushed myself up, but he helped me back down. “You're delicate at this stage, and I need you to have all the rest and not experience any pain. The baby is precious, but you're even more precious to me, Lyra,” he said, and gave my lips a peck with his. My eyes widened, but he'd grabbed his keys and was at the door before I could scold him. I smiled to myself, not too surprised by his childish antics. Kevin, despite his position at work and reputation as one of the most successful businessmen in the country, had the heart of a child. He blew a kiss and left me to think about my new reality. Mom couldn't drop by, so she asked Jake to spend his two free days with me. It wasn't that simple in my eyes, however. Two men that I considered sexy in every way were going to be together in the same house as me. I'd barely come to terms with my thoughts when the doorbell rang and they came in. Sexy DILFs. From their height to their toned abs. “Daddy!” I stood up and ran toward Jake, catching him by surprise with my hug. “Careful, darling,” he said as he kissed my forehead. Kevin frowned from where he stood beside us. It would, however, be more weird if I didn't greet him like this. He said I could call him Dad. Besides, what could possibly happen between us? It's just two days.
