Chapter 4

524 Words
The baby’s body, pink and rosy just moments before, had drained completely of color. Gone deathly pale and slack, it lolled as a limp dead weight in the nurse’s arms. The tiny creature gaped its small mouth weakly, letting out soft, whimpering cries, thrashing with the last flicker of strength it had left to cling to life. Clara lunged forward suddenly, her fingers digging into the arm of the doctor who was already packing away the emergency medical equipment. Her words came out fractured, panic swallowing her voice whole, "What's wrong with my baby?!" The doctor shook his head and let out a long, heavy sigh. "I’m sorry. The baby lost too much blood, they’ve already…” Clara shook all over, too unsteady to stand, and froze rigid in place. It wasn’t until the nurse placed her baby in her arms that she snapped back to herself. She crumpled to her knees hard. "Please! I beg you, save my baby!" The other doctors in the room fell silent, their eyes softening with nothing but pity and grief. The only answer she got was the sudden, blinding flash of a red alarm light from the heart monitor. A perfectly flat, straight line stretched unbroken across the screen. The little miracle she’d carried for nine long months gave one faint twitch in her arms, and then went completely still. The woman’s bone-deep, heart-shredding wails bounced off the walls of the room. Even the medical staff, who had seen countless lives come and go, could not hold back their tears. Clara stayed kneeling there, sobbing until she had no tears left to cry. It was not until late in the night that she finally turned to leave, clutching her baby's cold, still body in her arms. But the second she stepped out of the room, Gabe's voice drifted over from the other end of the hallway, "You told the doctor to drain every last drop of the baby's blood, didn't you?" Rose threw herself straight into Gabe's arms, sobbing her pretty eyes out. "I'm sorry, Gabe... I only did it to save my baby." Gabe closed his eyes and let her cry against his chest without moving. After a long, heavy silence, he finally wrapped his arms around her and whispered, "We can't let Clara find out. If she does, she won't let you get away with it." The very next second, Rose tilted her head and kissed him full on the mouth. Every drop of blood in Clara's body turned ice-cold in an instant. She clapped a hand over her mouth to muffle a sob, and fat, scalding tears splattered against the floor at her feet. This was the final slap in the face. Gabe's cold, offhand whisper to hide it all from her. Staggering to her feet, Clara fumbled her phone out of her pocket, pulled up the camera app, and held it steady to frame the two lovers locked in their passionate kiss. The second she was out of their line of sight, she dialed a number and spoke, "Is this the entertainment desk at Headline News? I’ve got a massive scoop for you."
