Clara scanned the room. Everyone in the space was drunk on the joy of the new baby, and the nurse buzzed around cleaning up medical equipment and checking on the new mother, leaving the entire area a chaotic mess. Seizing her chance, she slipped forward silently and lifted the newborn infant right into her arms. She walked straight down the hallway and climbed into a sedan that had been ready and waiting for her. The car tore down the road, speeding toward a cliff that jutted straight out over the ocean. Up on the cliff edge, a biting wind howled, snapping Clara’s thin coat against her body with a rhythmic flap. Clutching the swaddled bundle to her chest, she stood at the very lip of the drop and whispered to herself, "Baby, don't be scared. Mommy's here. I'm coming to be with you now.
