“When do you think you"ll get your new TV?” Kate said, noting a lingering look in McEwan"s eye. “Probably after I fake my own death and get the insurance money,” McEwan said. No one was here and nothing of immediate significance struck him on the ground floor. So far this house could belong to anyone suitably well off. The only unusual thing was that no one seemed to actually live here. The house felt sterile and unused, despite the upset soap and dirty dishes. Back in the hallway the stairs rose up to the first floor. The sunlight from the front door slowly diffused into shadow and McEwan entertained the thought he might be rising into Hell.
