The lift woke into life and McEwan stole a glance at Kate who seemed to have entered one of her states. She appeared to be staring into a far-off place a determined look on her face, jaw clenched, as though she was coping with a great deal of internal pain. He had been associating it with the conflict with whatever she had awoken inside her. Now he was beginning to wonder if it was a more human and down to earth problem than that.
