McEwan"s mobile phone began ringing. He picked it up off the desk. “Hello?” “Alex, where are you?” said Kate, sounding a little panicked. “I"m in the office, sorting through a few things.” The office was dead now everyone was on leave. He liked it this way. “What time is it?” she said. “About half eleven,” McEwan said looking at his watch, a replica of a World War II fighter pilot"s chronograph. “Oh.
