McEwan cried out to Kether to stop. Kether instead had anticipated an attack and parried an incoming blow. The last few Watchers, their bloodlust out of control, descended on each other, tooth and claw, rifle and blade. Limbs were hacked off and heads severed. Blood spurted. McEwan and Kate looked on in horror, unwilling witnesses of gladiatorial combat – there was nothing they could do to stop them.
