Not all of our means of getting by were as easy as nicking a few things from shops. Sometimes it was necessary to get some hard cash. We stood in a strange position. We lived on the street, but we weren"t quite part of the normal street life. We didn"t have anything to do with drugs. Didn"t take em, didn"t sell em. Maybe someone had tried and the same thing happened or there had been a better means than Kirsty of communicating the dangers. Davey"s idea to raise some money and pull ourselves out of the gutter was pretty much where it all started to go wrong. I"d been on Alston Street for over a year, I was fifteen and now one of the oldest.
