I had no idea why there were differences between the needles. Perhaps it was simply the energy of the city itself, its life being focussed into the needles. But that would hardly explain a "dead" needle in New York, a city well known for never sleeping. If it was because the needle was in a park as oppose to on a road, then why was Glasgow"s own alive? And why was Paris so strongly switched on? Paris had one thing obviously different – a golden pyramidal capstone – actually, for a long time, missing from the Parisian needle until it was replaced in 1998.
