Slowly he took a step down. Then another. He realised he was holding his breath. He was still afraid this hole would fall in on him. He climbed down another rung and was now half way into the chamber. He reminded himself to breathe and drew in a damp grassy breath. As McEwan went down another rung he got a better view of the chamber. He saw that the hole through which he was entering was the centre of a domed vault. The domed vault met a flat wall making a beehive shape. He relaxed a little knowing that there was enough space for him to move around and finished his descent. The floor of the chamber was almost flat but appeared to have a slight dome. The room was bare of any decoration that McEwan could see, but the blocks of stone, to his untrained eye, fitted one another perfectly. T
