The boat bobbed as waves moved from the centre of the loch, crashing onto the rocks at their feet. The three of them sought higher ground. Their feet slipped on wet stone that was hard enough to stand on, without the earth rumbling. Abruptly the quaking stopped. Across the loch they could see a large number of trees had fallen down.
“I didn"t think we were anywhere near a plate boundary,” McEwan said.
“Once upon a time this valley, the whole Great Glen was the edge of a plate,” Kate said, the hollowness in her voice increased as she began to realise what this could mean. “Why here, Robert?”
“It was an Abyss. Other than that, the creature was able to help me put the Name into the Abyss. Not many places like this are left on dry land and this one was nearby. I had no other reasons.”
