Chapter 5 :The War Beneath the Moon

1173 Words
The battlefield was a valley of stone and shadow, lit only by the red hue of the rising blood moon. Selene stood at the front line, her mark pulsing like fire under her armor. Behind her, hundreds of wolves—some in human form, others fully shifted—waited for her signal. Across the valley, the Brotherhood of Reclaimers had already taken a position. Their leader, Drevon Thornfang, rode a black direwolf and wore the ancient wolf skull of a fallen Alpha as his helm. Ronan rode up beside Selene. “He’s using bloodbinding magic. That helm—it's cursed. " Anyone who hears his howl loses control,” Selene nodded grimly. “Then I won’t let them hear it.” Cael stood on her other side, his blade strapped across his back, his golden eyes trained on the horizon. “The eastern ridge is too quiet. "They’re flanking.” Selene growled under her breath. “Then we cut through fast. Head of the serpent, first.” She raised her arms. The wolves responded with a thunderous howl. And then… they charged. The first clash was chaos. Steel met claw. Magic met rage. Selene weaved through enemies like wind, slashing through Reclaimer warriors as if they were smoke. Her mark glowed brighter with each strike, feeding her power. Cael and Ronan tore through the flank, carving a path toward Drevon himself. But halfway through, something shifted.A horn blew—once, sharply. Selene froze. That wasn’t their signal. Suddenly, wolves in her own ranks turned—fangs bared, eyes wild.“What the—?”“They’ve been hexed!” Ronan shouted. “The Brotherhood’s corrupted some of our own!” Selene spun just in time to deflect an attack from behind. One of her own warriors—Torin— had his eyes burning red. She kicked him hard, sending him crashing into a boulder. Cael shouted, “Selene, fall back! "They’ve breached the east!” But Selene didn’t move. Because at that moment, she locked eyes with Drevon Thornfang across the battlefield. He raised one hand and pointed straight at her. A command. Selene’s heart stopped. Dozens of wolves surged toward her. And standing among them… was Nalia. Selene’s chest tightened.“Nalia?” she whispered. Her scout, her friend, her most trusted fighter, was walking toward her with a blank expression, her blade already dripping.“Selene,” Cael growled. “Move.” But Selene didn’t. Because Nalia’s lips moved.“I’m sorry,” she mouthed. “I didn’t know.” Then she attacked. Their blades clashed in a scream of steel and sparks. Selene blocked, ducked, countered, but Nalia was fast—almost too fast. Blood sprayed. Selene didn’t know who. She finally caught Nalia’s wrist and twisted hard, disarming her. And instead of delivering a killing blow, Selene grabbed her face, pressed her forehead to hers, and whispered:“Remember who you are.” A pulse of moonlight erupted between them. Nalia gasped and collapsed. The spell broke. By dawn, the battlefield was soaked in blood, and the Reclaimers had retreated—what was left of them. Drevon had vanished into the mist. Selene stood in the ruins, her body aching, her arm bleeding. Around her, wolves howled in victory… and mourning. Nalia stirred at her feet, blinking as if waking from a long sleep.“I saw it all,” she whispered. “Their plans… their next move…” Selene knelt beside her. “Tell me.”“They’re not just coming for you anymore,” Nalia said weakly. “They’re coming… for your child.” Selene froze.“What child?” Nalia looked at her—eyes wide with both fear and awe.“You haven’t felt it yet… but you carry the next heir.” Selene stared at Nalia in silence, her breath catching in her throat." You carry the next heir," Nalia repeated, her voice weak but clear. Selene stepped back as if the words themselves had weight.“No,” she whispered. “That’s not possible.” But even as she said it, her hand slowly moved to her stomach. Her wolf stirred—not in alarm, but with fierce, protective instinct. Cael approached warily, blood on his collar and worry in his eyes.“What’s going on?” he asked, glancing between them. Selene met his gaze. “She says… I’m pregnant.” Cael’s face drained of color. “That’s... that’s not…” Selene didn’t move. They hadn’t mated in the traditional sense of the bond—not yet. But they were Fated Mates. Their connection went beyond flesh and time. And under the blood moon, their union may have been sealed in ways beyond their understanding. Nalia sat up slowly. I saw it in the vision they gave me. A child with your eyes… and his spirit. A future Alpha. A bridge between what was and what was coming.” Selene turned away, heart pounding. She’d prepared herself to lead. To fight. To die, if she must. But not this. Never this. Later that night, Selene sat alone at the edge of the lake outside the camp. The moon shimmered on the surface like a mirror, rippling as if it held secrets. Cael joined her, his expression unreadable." You didn’t tell me," he said softly." I didn’t know," she whispered. They sat in silence for a while. Then he asked, “Are you scared?” Selene didn’t answer right away. “I'd faced death. Betrayal. Pain. "But this... "This is life. ""I never planned for it,” Cael nodded slowly. “I didn’t either." But… I want this. "With you.” Selene turned to him. “You’re not just saying that because you feel obligated?” He reached out, taking her hand and placing it over his heart. “No. "I’ve lost everything once. "I’m not losing you—or them.” Tears welled in her eyes. She rarely cried. But this time, they came without shame. They weren’t tears of fear. They were tears of hope. The next morning, the entire camp met. Some bowed deeper. Others stared in stunned silence. The idea of a new Alpha—a child born from prophecy and power—shook the pack to its core. But Selene didn’t hide. She stood tall, her hand resting gently on her stomach, a symbol of strength—not vulnerability. Ronan approached her with a scroll. “Our spies intercepted a message from Drevon.” She took it, unrolling the scroll. It read:“The child must not be born. "The bloodline ends with her—or the world burns.” Cael growled. “Cowards.” Selene folded the parchment. “They fear what they can’t control. "That’s always been their weakness,” Ronan nodded. “We’ll protect you." All of us.” Selene looked at him—and at the dozens of wolves surrounding her now. Not just warriors, but families. Elders. Pups. She was no longer just fighting for vengeance. She was fighting for a future.
