Stark terror. Fear. Powerless. Miscalculations. All these words and feelings swirled around in my brain as I deftly jumped off my jet before it could even land. f*****g hell. We’d been idiots. I felt the bond break, felt the pain and searing loss. Felt Evelina’s despair as it seared itself into me, imprinting how I had failed her into every crevice of my being. What I couldn’t do was feel out her location. My men were all incapacitated, poisoned because f*****g Joel snuck onto the packlands and managed to slip the concoction into last night’s food. s**t. I’d thought he was an idiotic drunk. I’d never thought he’d be a threat.
