Chapter 2

My wrist trembled violently. I carefully lifted the curtain just enough to peek through. William had Beth, his secretary, pinned on our bed. His arm was wrapped around her waist as she kissed him until his breathing grew ragged. Taking a breath between kisses, Beth asked, "What if she comes home early and catches us in bed?" William answered between ragged breaths, "I told her to go to the island ahead of time. She always listens to me. She won't come back early." The blood drained from my body. I covered my mouth, afraid to make a sound. I held myself together until my entire body began to tremble, my mind collapsing under the weight of it all. Eight times. They went at it eight times that night. And one of her cries—sharper, higher than the rest—almost made me black out. I don't remember when they finally left. I collapsed onto the floor and numbly organized the video I had recorded, sending it to the media. Then I had my lawyer draw up a divorce agreement. From the moment he cheated on me, my marriage to him was already over. I came back to myself and continued staring at the yacht in the distance. Just then, a reporter called. I swiped to answer. "Susie, are you sure you want us to publish this the day after tomorrow? We're worried that Mr. William might—" "I'll pay you handsomely. He won't do anything to you." My voice was calm. Because soon, he would have nothing left. "All right. May I ask why he cheated? It would help us with the article." "I don't think cheating needs a reason." A sigh came from the other end. The call ended. I took a breath, only to hear William's voice behind me. "Who cheated?" I turned to look at him. There was a hint of panic in his expression, his brows drawn tightly together. Calmly, I turned my phone screen toward him. "Some celebrity's husband. The media isn't sure yet, so they called to ask whether they should expose him. What do you think? What kind of punishment should a man like that get?" William found nothing unusual in my expression. He visibly relaxed and smiled. "Cheating is absolutely unforgivable. And it should definitely be exposed. Let everyone know what kind of man he is. Don't worry. Something like that could never happen to me." He looked so righteous that there wasn't a trace of guilt on his face. "Really?" I asked. "Of course. If I ever cheated on you, you could punish me however you wanted." William gently ruffled my hair. I smiled faintly but said nothing. Now, whenever I looked at him, all I felt was disgust. The day after tomorrow, he would pay for everything. After making his heartfelt promise, William reached for my hand. Just then, the phone in his pocket rang. A flash of irritation crossed his face, as though someone had interrupted something important. He turned over the screen to check it. Cold sweat instantly appeared on his forehead, and he quickly suppressed a flicker of desire in his eyes. I knew it was Beth calling. I pretended not to notice and turned away. William looked slightly apologetic as he explained, "Honey, I'm really sorry. I'll have someone take you back to the hotel to rest. I still have some work to take care of. We still have all of tomorrow. I promise I'll spend the day with you and show you a good time on the island. I'll make it up to you later. Whatever you want, you can have it." I smiled without saying a word and simply nodded. William hurried away, afraid I might notice something was wrong. Normally, whenever William was with me, his phone was always turned off. He hated letting work interrupt our time together. I didn't even know when he had stopped turning it off. After he left, I set down my wineglass and followed him.
